Biomedical Sciences Updates for 2022-2023

BSc (BMSC) Program

In 2021-22 the College of Arts and Science, in partnership with the College of Medicine, introduced the new
collaborative degree, a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences (BSc (BMSC)). The new BSc (BMSC)
allows students to apply directly from high school with enhanced entrance requirements compared to the regular
BSc in Arts and Science (A&S). Students applying directly from high school will need the following
prerequisites: Chemistry 30, Biology 30, and Math Foundations 30 each with a minimum average of 70% and
minimum average of 70% using the five mark formula. More information about admissions requirements can
be found here in the Arts and Science – Biomedical Sciences dropdown menu.

New Major Map for BMSC Programs

The Biomedical Sciences launched a Major Map page that can be found here. Major Maps provide detailed
information on the degree and career information.

What Biomedical Science majors are available?

Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences (BSc (BMSC))

Biomedical Foundations (BMF)- 3-year

Biochemistry, Microbiology, & Immunology (BMI)- 4-year or honours
Biomedical Neuroscience (BMNS)- 4-year or honours
Cellular Physiological & Pharmacological Sciences (CPPS)- 4-year or honours
Interdisciplinary Biomedical Science (ID BMSC)- 4-year or honours

Process to Pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences
(BSc (BMSC))
How do I transfer to the new BSc (BMSC)?

The transfer process is completed annually through a survey (a survey link will be sent to students through
PAWS announcements when the survey is active on February 15th). In order to transfer into the BSc (BMSC)
you will require a passing grade (50% minimum) in 100-level or higher BIOL, CHEM, MATH. If there are
deficiencies in any of these requirements your high school grade will be reviewed with the following requirements:
Chemistry 30, Biology 30, and Math Foundations 30 each with a minimum average of 70%.

Process to Declare Intent for a BSc (BMSC) Major

How can I declare the 3-year BSc (BMSC) Biomedical Foundations major (BMF))?

Once you have transferred into the BSc (BMSC) program, you will have an undeclared major. You can switch to
three-year BMF program at any time through the ‘A&S Inquiry’ form found here.

How can I declare one of the BSc (BMSC) 4-year majors (BMI, BMNS, CPPS, ID BMSC)?

The process to declare a BMSC 4-year major is slightly different from other A&S programs. You first need to
complete all the courses indicated in the table below by the end of April in the year you want to declare a major. In
that year, you will be able to declare your intent for a BMSC major from February 15th to April 30th by going
through the survey (a survey link will be sent to students through PAWS announcements when the survey is
active on February 15th). The survey will prompt you to rank the majors from most preferred to least preferred.
You must meet specific criteria (outlined in the table below) to be officially switched to one of the new programs.
The survey to declare a major needs to be completed by April 30, 2022, for the 2022-23 academic year. Once all
the surveys are received, all students will be checked for their required courses and ranked (if requesting a program
with limited seats) You will be informed of your placement in May of the year you declare.

Required classes to declare a 4-year major*:

Criteria for BMI, BMNS, CPPS & ID BMSC (4-year) majors:

BMSC 200.3 BMSC 220.3
BMSC 207.3 BMSC 230.3
BMSC 208.3 BMSC 240.3
BMSC 210.3 CHEM 250.3

2
* These classes must be completed by April 30, 2022 to declare for the 2022-23 academic year.

Is space limited in the new majors? Yes, there will be limited capacity in the Biomedical Neuroscience and the
Interdisciplinary Biomedical Science majors. If student demand is greater than the capacity of the program, all
eligible students will be ranked by their average in the courses included in the criteria to declare a major. The top
students will be accepted into the major and the remaining will be placed in their second choice.

Second Degrees in Biomedical Sciences

If I have completed a BMSC degree that is no longer available (ACB, BIOC, MCIM, PHPY) can I
upgrade this degree? You cannot upgrade a degree that is no longer offered, but you can return to complete a
second degree. Note that there are exclusions on which second degrees can be completed. Exclusions can be
viewed in the current catalogue within each major. More information and the second degree policy can be found in
academic policies found here. Ensure you meet with an A&S undergraduate academic advisor before you pursue a
second degree.
