Lesson plan

Class: IV Date:
Topic: Conjunctions No. of students: 15
Subject: English Duration: 35 minutes

NPSTP
LEVELS
Objectives: The students will be able to;
● Recognize and recall common conjunctions such as "and,"
"but," "or," and "because" and their function in joining
words and phrases.
● Distinguish between different conjunctions by identifying
the appropriate conjunction for various sentence types and
contexts.
● Form sentences using conjunctions to connect ideas in an
activity where students create sentences about familiar
topics or scenarios, demonstrating how conjunctions add
meaning and clarity.

Teaching ● Flashcards
resources: ● Sentence Strips
● Markers
Teaching method: ● Collaborative Learning
● Questioning and Discussion

Initiating: ● Teacher will start by asking students simple questions to

activate prior knowledge, such as:

● "What are some words we use to connect ideas or parts

of sentences?"
● "Do you know any words that can link two things
together, like ‘and’ or ‘but’?”
● Then Teacher will encourage students to think about how
these words help connect ideas. Prompt them to predict
that these words are called "conjunctions.”
● Then teacher will explain that conjunctions are special
words we use to join words, phrases, or sentences. Write
the four conjunctions on the board: "and," "but," "or," and
"because." Briefly introduce their purposes:

● And: Used to add information.

● But: Used to show contrast.
● Or: Used to show choice.
● Because: Used to give a reason and vice versa

Development: ● Then after the introduction of a chapter teacher will

● Divide students into pairs and give each pair a set of
flashcards with conjunctions and some sentence strips split
into two parts.
● Ask students to read each sentence and decide which
conjunction would best complete it. For example:
● "I want to play outside ___ it is raining." (Answer: but)
● "I like apples ___ oranges." (Answer: and)
● Review answers as a class, and discuss why each
conjunction was chosen to complete the sentence.

Adaptation: ● To Deepen their understanding teacher will share real-life

scenarios where conjunctions make sentences clearer and
more interesting. For instance:
● "I brought my umbrella because it might rain."
● "We can go to the park or the zoo on Sunday."
● Examples: Ask students to think about how they use
conjunctions in daily life when talking with family or
friends. Prompt them with scenarios
● Choosing between two options: "Do you want pizza or
pasta?"
● Adding ideas: "I want to go to the beach and play in the
sand."
● Giving reasons: "I can’t come to play because I have
homework.”
● This will help students see that conjunctions are part of
everyday language and help them organize their thoughts.

Recapitulation: ● Teacher will summarize each conjunction and its function:

● "And" for adding information.

● "But" for showing contrast.
● "Or" for choices.
● "Because" for giving reasons.
● Then the teacher will display a few simple sentences with
missing conjunctions on the board and ask students to
quickly choose the appropriate conjunction. For example:
● "She is tall ___ she runs fast." (but)
● "Do you want tea ___ coffee?" (or)
● This exercise reinforces their understanding and boosts
their confidence in choosing the correct conjunction.

Evaluation: ● Teacher will divide students into small groups and assign
each group a conjunction. Ask them to come up with three
sentences using their assigned conjunction.
● Each group will share one sentence with the class. This
activity assesses their understanding of the function and
application of conjunctions.
● For homework, students should write three sentences using
conjunctions they learned in class. They will share these
sentences in the next class to review their understanding
and further discuss conjunction usage.
