Real World Situation

Chris White has many animals on his farm. He has 72 ducks,

which make up 60% of his total animals, and the rest of his
animals are horses. How many legs in total do his animals
have?

Solution;

1) Step One of Polya's Process is to understand the problem.

We are trying to count how many legs the animals have in
total. The animals are ducks (which have 2 legs each) and
horse (which have 4 legs each).

2) Step Two of Polya's Process is to devise a plan. We will

work with an equation. An example of an equation to use to
solve the problem is (72 ducks 2 legs) + (number of horses *
4 legs) = total legs. However, we do not know the number of
sheep. We know that 60% of the total number of animals is
equal to 72, so if n is the total number of animals, we have
0.60n 72 so the total number of animals is72 /0.6 120. Then
the number of horse is the remaining amount of animals. A
revised equation tousle to solve the problem is (72 ducks 2
legs) + ((120-72) horses* 4 legs) = total legs.

3) Step Three is to carry out the plan. We will solve our

equation. 120-72 48 horses, and so we have (72 * 2) + (48 * 4)
= total legs. 72 *2 144 and 48 *4 192, so the total number of
legs is 144+192 =336 legs.

4) Step Four is to look back. Does this answer make sense?

There should be more legs than animals and the number

should be an even number (the animals each have an even
number of legs) and 336 fits this. We can check that 0.6(120)
= 72 ducks and that0.4 (120) = 48 to make sure the number of
animals is correct.

Reflection:

1. Which is easier to do the task – by using Polya’s or not

using Polya’s strategies? Why?
- Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about
logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns
and structures. When patterns are found, often in widely
different areas of science and technology, the mathematics
of these patterns can be used to explain and control natural
happenings and situations. Mathematics has a pervasive
influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the
wealth of the country.
For me, the easier to do the task is by using Polya's
strategies. Nearly 100 years ago, a man named George Polya
designed a four-step method to solve all kinds of problems:
Understand the problem, make a plan, execute the plan, and
look back and reflect. Because the method is simple and
generalizes well, it has become a classic method for solving
problems. Polya made important contributions to probability
theory, number theory, the theory of functions, and the
calculus of variations. It help us students solve the problem
at hand, and the second is to develop the student's ability to
solve the problem himself.

In contrast to conventional mathematics classroom

environments, a Polya's Problem-Solving Process provides
students with opportunities to develop their abilities to adapt
and change methods to fit new situations.

2. Which is much faster using polya’s or not? Why is so?

- Using polya's, because polyas problem solving process can
contribute significantly to the outcome of mathematics
education. Not only is it a vehicle for developing logical
thinking, it can provide students with a context for learning
mathematical knowledge, it can enhance transfer of skills to
unfamiliar situations and it is an aesthetic form in itself.
Moreover, four step process of Polya’s for problem solving
helps students keep in mind the common sense nature of
math and mathematical problem solving. With them, students
were able to use the reasoning abilities they already have to
leap hurdles they might have previously thought
insurmountable.
3. In your opinion which is better? Is it tackling the problem
directly or using polya’s problem solving strategies? Defend
your answer.
- In my opinion, I think it is better when we using polya's
problem solving strategies than tackling the problem directly
because doing polya will enable you to predict what strategy
to use to solve future problems.
By incorporating problem solving in their classrooms,
teachers will enable students not only to attain one of
the general aims of mathematics curriculum namely
to identify and solving problems and make decisions,
using critical and creative thinking, but also to attain
a specific aim for school mathematics, namely to apply
mathematics to solve problems, using acquired knowledge
and skills.
