1. This assignment no.1 must be performed and submitted by group consisting of the same
set of members with that of the f2f laboratory activities.
2. This task requires a hand-written solution of the answer to each problem.
3. The solution must be hand-written on the plate provided only. Use of another format is
strictly not allowed.

6. Failure to comply to any of the guidelines will incur demerit of points.
Problem 1:
The figure below shows the magnitudes of stresses of soil. Determine the magnitude of
the principal stresses as well as the Normal and Shear stresses on Plane AB if σ x = 120
kN/m2, τ = 40 kN/m2, σy =300 kN/m2, θ = 20°.

have the same stress increase at the mid-height of the clay as lowering the water table
2m.
b. If by dewatering, the water level is lowered by 3m, determine the stress at the bottom
of the soil formation.

Problem 5:
A square column foundation 1.5 m x 1.5 m is shown in the Figure. It carries an axial
load of 446 kN and has its bottom resting on the ground water table located 1.4 m below
the ground surface.
a. Compute the average increase in pressure in the clay layer below the center of
the foundation using 2:1 Method.
b. Compute the effective pressure at the mid-height of the clay layer.
c. Compute the settlement of the clay layer caused by primary consolidation if the
preconsolidation pressure of the clay is 96 kPa.
