Assigment 3

The document outlines an assignment for the Advanced Structural Design of Concrete Structures course at Kathmandu University, focusing on the analysis and design of reinforced concrete (RC) elements. It includes tasks such as explaining failure modes, calculating moments of resistance for various beam sections, and designing beams under specified loads using both Working Stress Method (WSM) and Limit State Method (LSM). The assignment is due on November 15, 2024, and requires the use of specific design codes and references.

Advanced Structural Design of Concrete Structures MSTR505

Assume necessary data as per requirement
Download available books related to RC and Advanced RC design and codes IS 456:2000, SP-
16, SP-22, SP34-1987, SP 24-1983, ACI 318-05, ACI 318R-14 etc. for your reference

Assignment#3: Analysis and Design of Unit_1 and 2 (Review of RCC)

Analyze and design with reinforcement detailing. Assume Suitable required data
Date of assignment: 14th October 2024 Submission date: 15th November 2024
1. Explain different failure modes of RC elements with expression (both WSM and LSM).
2. A rectangular beam section is 30 cm wide and 50 cm deep up to the center of tension steel
which consists of 4-16 mm bars. (M20 and Fe500). Find using WSM
i. Cracking moment
ii. And stress due to external moment which is 10 kNm less than determined cracking
moment and 10 kNm more than determined cracking moment. And compare the
results.
3. Design a rectangular beam (WSM and LSM) at mid span having 3 meter simply supported
clear span. It is subjected to a dead load of 20 kN/m and a live load of 25 kN/m. (M20,
Fe500).

4. Determine the MOR of the given beam section (WSM and LSM), 30 cm wide and 45 cm
deep upto center of reinforcement, if it is reinforced with 4-12mm Fe425 and M20.

5. Find the MOR of a beam section 25 cm by 50 cm deep if it is reinforced with 3-25 mm bars
in tension at an effective cover of 40mm. M25 and Fe500. And what would be the increase
in the moment of resistance if it is reinforced with 2-16mm bars of Fe500 in compression
side? Weather the NA would shift upward or downward, and by what amount? (Hint: SRB
as we as DRB)

6. An L-beam has a flange of effective width 90 cm and depth 10 cm. the web below is 25 cm
by 50 cm. determine the areas of the compression and tension steels needed for the cross
section if it is to carry a factored bending moment of 600 kNm. M20 and Fe500.
