An Operating System is one of the most important softwares.

It is a program with a set of instructions


that a computer will follow to do a specific task easily.

Windows 10 is the latest version of the Windows Operating System released last July 29, 2015 by the
Microsoft Company. It has a lot of new and interesting features that the user will really enjoy.

Windows 10 is an Operating System software that will help you open and use many programs at the
same time. You can open a program by simply double-clicking the icons. Icons are small pictures that
represent programs.

How to Start the Windows 10 OS

Starting the Windows 10 is so easy. Simply turn on your computer by pressing the power button.
Windows 10 will automatically start.

The first thing you will see on the screen is the Lock Screen. It has a background image that fills the
entire screen. It shows the date and time, the network status, and the battery icon.

The network status icon shows if you are connected to the Internet. The battery life icon will only be
visible if you are using a laptop or tablet.

After pressing the space bar, you will see the Log-in screen.

The log-in screen will ask you to sign-in by choosing an acount. May require you to enter a password.
Ask the assistance of your teacher to log in.

Parts of the Desktop

Desktop - It is the overall working area is Windows.

Desktop Icons - These are small graphical pictures or folders which allow you to open files, folders, or
programs.

Wallpaper - It is the background image on the desktop.

Taskbar - It is a long rectangular bar found at the bottom of the desktop. It contains the start button, the
Search Windows icon, the Task View Icon, and other program icons.

Task View Icon - Clicking this icon will show you thumbnails [small pictures] of all application programs
that are currently open.

The Notification Area - It is located at the bottom right side of the taskbar. It contains the following:

* Current date and time


* Notification

* Sound status

* Other hidden icons

You can also see other program icons in the taskbar which have been pinned.

Clicking the Start button in the taskbar will show you the Start menu.

The Start menu is back! Now with its new look, it combines the Windows 8 Start screen with tiles on
the right side of the the Start menu. With its Metro Apps look, it lists all your applications sorted
alphabetically. The Start menu makes it easy for you to access apps.

Hand-on Exercise 7.2: Exploring the Desktop and Changing the Wallpaper

1. Right-click your mouse on the empty space on the desktop, then choose Personalize.
2. On the Personalization window, choose Background, then select the background picture you want to
set.

Hands-on Exercise 7.3: Working with start menu, Resizing the start Menu Tiles

1. Click the Start button to show Start menu.

2. Point your mouse pointer on the right side of the Start menu. Wait for the double-headed arrow to
appear . Then, drag the mouse going to the right, to resize the Start menu.

3. To resize the tile, point your mouse to the calendar tile, then right click the mouse, and select Resize.

Start.

Let`s Start

Working with Windows is very easy. You can open and work on programs at the same time.

When you open two to three programs and work on them simultaneously, we call that multitasking.
If several programs are opened, you can view and arrange them on the Desktop. It is just like
organi1zing your things such as your books, pens, papers, and other school materials in your bag.

In using any program, you need to be familiar with the parts so that you can easily work on them
accordingly.

Parts of the Microsoft Word Window

Application icon

- Each program has an application icon that represents what program is running.

It contains a set of commonly used commands for easy access.


Title bar - Located on top of the Window, it tells you the name of the program that you are using.1

- It contains four buttons {Minimize button, Restore Down button, Maximize


button, and close button} that control the window`s appearance.

Each Tab has a set of tasks that is organized in Groups, and each group has commands according to
its task. The name of the group is displayed at the middle bottom. Groups are placed together in the
Ribbon at the top section of the screen below the Tabs.

If you want to open different programs at the same time, you can view and organize the look of the
window by arranging the programs. You can arrange Windows in different ways such as:
