WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT (7)

Focus Skill: Making Inferences

Samantha and the Chipmunks

As Samantha rode the bus home one day, she stared out the window at the
world rushing past her. The trees, fields, and scattered houses all blurred
together until the bus stopped, and then the world came into focus again. At
one stop, she noticed an old oak tree near the road with a funny large bump
on one side that was round like a bowl. As she stared, four tiny baby chipmunks
poked their heads out of the bump in the tree.
Samantha thought about the chipmunks for the rest of her ride home,
wondering what it was like to live in a bump on the side of a tree. She searched
her bag for blank paper and a pencil, but she had none. She frowned and
stared back out the window.
Once she got off the bus, Samantha sprinted to her house, charged through the
front door, yelled hello to her father, and bounded up the stairs to her bedroom.
With great haste, she pulled a notebook and some pencils out of her desk.
Samantha wrote until her hand was cramped and her father called her for
dinner. As she headed downstairs, she carried her notebook with her.
