City of Makassar ( Makassar : , sometimes spelled Macassar , Mangkasar; from 1971 until 1999 officially known as Ujung Pandang or Ujung Pandang ) is amunicipality and also the capital of the province of South Sulawesi . Municipality is the largest city in the 5 8 'S 119 25'ECoordinates:5 8'S119 25'E , on the southwest coast of the island of Sulawesi , facing the Makassar Strait . Since the 16th century , Makassar was the dominant commercial center in East Indonesia, and later became one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia . Makassar kings implement a strict policy of free trade, in which all visitors to Makassar entitled to conduct commerce there, and resisted attempts VOC (Dutch ) to acquire the right of monopoly in the city.

In addition, attitudes tolerant of religion means that although Islam is increasingly becoming a major religion in the region, religious Christian and other beliefs can still trade in Makassar.This causes the Makassar became an important center for those Malays who work in the trade in the Maluku islands , and also became an important base for traders from Europeand Arab . Port of Soekarno-Hatta Makassar in Makassar, Soekarno-Hatta became the name of the port, especially the port for passenger ships and passenger terminals. This port is managed by PT Indonesia Port IV (IPCs IV) Passengers in the port area have Babussalam Mosque. Makassar city has an airport of international, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airportthat on September 26, 2008 was inaugurated by President Gen. Army (Ret.) Dr.. H.Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, which marks the beginning at the time of Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport is fully operational which had previously been in operation but only partially. Hasanuddin Airport also has a special airport taxi prices vary according to region of the targeted area and shuttle buses that serve specific pathways to and from the new airport. In the year 2009 is expected runway has been completed and a new one can be used. [2]
