My Name Writing Assessment

Step 1: Brainstorm

● Fill in the graphic organizer below to help you come up with some ideas about what you could
write about in your "My Name" writing task.
● You may not be able to respond to all of these. Focus on the ones you know; you are
encouraged to talk to your family tonight about your name too!
● Remember that you don't have to include everything from this graphic organizer in your writing
piece, it is just meant to help get your brain moving.

Step 2: Writing task and expectations

On your own piece of paper, write a reflection on your own name and what it means to you.

This assignment is all about style in writing: strong word choice, sentence structure, etc. This is also
your first chance to show me who you are as a writer. Focus on quality over quantity, but your work
should be at least 15 sentences.

Use the brainstorm questions to help guide you, but not limit you. Try using language to create a
feeling. Instead of telling the reader how you feel, show it.

● Telling: “I don’t like my name because people never pronounce it right.”

● Showing: “At school they say my name funny as if the syllables were made out of tin and hurt
the roof of your mouth.”

If you are stuck:

● Use the brainstorm to help you.
● Research your name for ideas!
● Talk to your family or check in with me
