3 System features
This water purification system is designed for the production of deionized Pure Water out of softened
drinking water from public supplies. Pure Water will be produced by a Reverse-Osmosis unit and the final
® ®
deionization by the El-Ion cell. The El-Ion electro-deionization removes last dissolved ions, particles and
®
bacteria from the water. The resin inside the El-Ion cell will be regenerated permanently by an electro-
chemical process and does not need to be exchanged. The system has to be connected to a level controlled
tank to regulate the production.

Production rate of deionized Pure Water is 180 liter per hour.

Typical characteristics are:

Conductivity under 0.1 µS/cm (resistivity over 10 MΩ-cm),

TOC concentration (Total Organic Carbon) under 30 ppb;
bacteria less than 5 cfu/ml
and particle rejection rate over 99%.
®
Currently recorded data and warning messages are shown on the system monitor. The El-Ion electricity
data are shown at indicators.

The production automatically runs in 3 different modes:

Operation mode: Pure Water production and tank filling

Shut down mode: Reverse-Osmosis and Electro deionization stop and are rinsed
Standby mode: System is ready for new production

All components of the system are assembled in a plastic coated steel frame standing on wheels.
The side coverings can easily be opened for maintenance works. The system corresponds to the latest
technology and to recent safety regulations. It can be installed and put into operation without the help of
customer service engineers.

3.1 Purification process

The process flow with the main components is illustrated on the P&ID, see the appendix.
When the system is started in production mode, the inlet valve (V3.1) opens and the Reverse-Osmosis pump
(P3.1) starts. If the system is turned OFF, in case of feed water shortage, or if the tank is filled, this valve
closes and the reverse-osmosis pump stops.
The fine filter (F3.1) is a combination of activated carbon and filtration. It adsorbs organic chemicals like free
chlorine, insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides out of the water and removes particles larger than 5
microns.
The pretreated Feed water conductivity is monitored with a sensor (QIA+ Q1) and indicated with Q1.
If the conductivity exceeds the set point, a warning message will be displayed on the system monitor.
The supply of feed water is monitored with a pressure switch (PSA- P3.1). If the pressure falls below the
limit, a warning message will be displayed and the production stops, until the pressure is in the limit again.
The reverse-osmosis pump (P3.1) increases the inlet pressure for the Reverse-Osmosis process.
The operational pressure is indicated with a pressure gauge (PI3.1) and can be regulated with the pressure
control valve (V3.5).
The reverse-osmosis module unit (F3.2) removes about 98% of the salt content out of the water.
Moreover nearly all bacteria and viruses, heavy metal complexes, and organic molecules with a molecular
weight higher than 300 Daltons are rejected. The water including the ingredients is called concentrate, the
cleaned water is called permeate.
The concentrate partly flows to the waste water disposal via restriction (V3.6) and partly back to the reverse-
osmosis pump via flow control vlave (V3.5).
The service valve (V3.7) must be closed for normal operation (position crosswise to flow direction) and shall
be opened only by service technicians in case of maintenance works.
The conductivity of the permeate is monitored with a sensor (QISA+ Q2) and indicated with Q2.
If the conductivity exceeds the set point, a warning message will be displayed and the output of permeate
stops (V3.2 closes, V3.3 opens).
The permeate flows back to the RO-pump via check valve (V3.4). If the conductivity is in the limit, the
®
permeate flows to the El-Ion cell.
Three flow transmitters (FTA- 3.1 / FTA- 3.2 / FTA-4.1) monitors the permeate flow rate, concentrate flow
rate and sole flow rate in the system.
®
The El-Ion cell (E4.1) removes still remaining ions and particles out of the permeate by the principle of
electro-deionization. Positive and negative ions pass a membrane into a concentrate chamber and are
rinsed out by a permanent flushing stream. (see chapter 3.2 Purification diagram)
The concentrated water with accumulated ions is called brine.
The conductivity of this deionized permeate is monitored with a sensor (QIA+ Q3) and indicated with Q3.
If the conductivity exceeds the set point, a warning message will be displayed on the system monitor.
The temperature of the water is measured by a temperature sensor (TA+ 4.1) and displayed on the system
monitor.
The system has to be connected to a tank (T5.1) with level control (LS-5.1) to regulate the production. When
®
the tank is filled (100%), the production stops and the system turns into the shut-down mode. El-Ion cell and
RO membranes are rinsed. In the stand-by mode the system is ready for new production. If the level falls
below 80%, the production starts again.
The system can be operated in a service mode for maintenance works.
OPTION:
An external distribution pump can be connected with the system. If the tank level drops below 8%, the pump
would be stopped for dry running protection.
An external UV-Lamp can be connected with the system to protect the product water against bacterial
contamination.
For economical use the optional distribution pump or UV-Lamp can be operated in interval mode with 2
separate intervals and day/night program.

3.2 Purification diagram

®
Schematic diagram of the El-Ion cell. The conductivity will be decreased by an electro-chemical process
®
within the El-Ion cell. The ion exchange chamber provide for a salt removal from the water. Concentrate will
be drained. The conductivity value of the ultra pure water will be lower than 0.5 µS/cm.

3.3 Security advice

®
During the electro deionization process a small amount of hydrogen gas will be produced inside the El-Ion
cell. This gas will be carried out of the cell through the product water stream.
During storage of the product water hydrogen can accumulate in the tank in case of insufficient air
ventilation.

Important!

The tank opening must be clearly marked with the enclosed fire warning labels.
No fire or fire causing devices are allowed near the unit and the tank.
Fire warning labels are enclosed this manual.

7.1 Adjustment of the operation pressure
The operation pressure is shown on the pressure gauge (PI3.1) located at the front side.
The pressure has to be in a rang between 6 and 14 bar.
If the pressure is out of the range, it can be adjusted with a screw on top of the pressure control (V3.5)

7.2 Filter replacement

The replacement of the fine filter (F3.1) has to be chosen individually and depends on the contamination of
the feed water.

In case of feed water with potable water quality, a replacement of the filter is recommended all 3 months.

Filter attachment

Filter body

Replacement of the filter:

– Stop the system with the OFF function key

– Open left cabinet side

– Wait for the pressure reduction indicated on the pressure gauge (PI3.1)

– Unscrew the filter case anticlockwise with the supplied filter gripper

– Replace the filter cartridge

– Start the system with the ON function key

– Check for impermeability of all connections and close the left cabinet side again

– System is ready

If the system detects any problem, warning messages will be displayed on the system’s screen.
Follow the given instructions to correct the fault or get in contact with the customer support.
®
The El-Ion electricity meters on the front have to be checked temporarily:

The current is factory preset to 8 A Cell 1 and 4 A Cell 2. The voltage of the cells depends on the feed water
quality.

The adjustment potentiometer is located on the aluminum plate mounted on the ground of the electric
cabinet.
