5.0 Methodology
5.1 Liquid Applied Waterproofing

A. Surface Preparation:

 Concrete surface shall be cleaned to remove the dust, debris, loose particles, dirt, grease or
any other contaminant that might impair adhesion, and expose the solid concrete surface.

 Laitance should preferably be removed by light sweep blasting or hydro jetting. Mechanical wire
brushing may be appropriate for small areas to expose solid concrete surface.

 Concrete protrusions must be chipped off by mechanical grinding or chiselling.

 Spalled concrete should be cut back to sound concrete and made good with a suitable
cementitious repair mortar, modified with SBR (Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber)

 Preferably establish 70 x 70 mm mortar cant-strip with “SBR (Styrene-Butadiene-Rubber)”

admixture to junction line between horizontal and vertical surfaces (to reduce the angle from 90
degrees to 45 degrees thus reducing the stress in the membrane)

 Some Waterproofing coatings may be applied to damp concrete surface but not onto
waterlogged surfaces, verify with manufacturer’s representative.

 Where needed, prime surface as required by manufacturer

 Refer to manufacturer’s cut sheet for additional requirements

<Modify the above steps as required by Manufacturer>

B. Mixing (where applicable)

 (If multi component) Waterproofing material is supplied in pre-measured units and should be
mixed on site utilizing clean containers.
 Slowly add the (componants) and mix, using a slow speed drill fitted with a suitable paddle. Do
not mix more material than can be used in one hour.
 Do not re-temper with water (if the mix stiffens, do not add water to make it workable).

C. Application

 Apply by trowl, brush, squeegee or spray gun waterproofing at the frequency and rate
specified by the manufacturer.

 Allow enough time for curing of the first coat. Subsequent coats are to be applied after the
first coat is completely dry.

5.2 Rubber/Bitumen/EPDM Waterproofing Membrane System

A. Surface Preparation:

 Sweep all loose debris from concrete blinding tanking substrate prior to application of
waterproofing membrane.

 Fill holes, honeycombs, rock pockets, spalls or other voids and indentations with approved
concrete patching compound.

 Grind or fill surface at cold construction joints to provide a smooth and level surface.

 All surfaces shall be structurally sound, dry, and free from dust, dirt, projections (fins, sharp
edges…etc), foreign material, oil, grease and all contaminants that may affect adhesion of
membrane.

 For self adhered membrane, apply primer as per manufacturer’s recommendations.

B. Application of Waterproofing Membrane:

 For EPDM Rubber Elastomeric single layer of EPDM 0.060” thick, rubber elastomeric waterproofing
membrane, loose laid, mechanically secured to vertical surfaces using Seam Fastening Plates &
Screws, fixed at 12.0” O.C. Membrane overlaps shall be 6.0” (15.0 cm) first cleaned by Splice
Cleaner, seamed with Splicing Cement and sealed at the external edge with Lap Sealant.
 For self-adhesive waterproofing membrane peel the back of the protective release paper and apply
the adhesive face onto the prepared surface free from ice frost or condensation. The membrane
should be brushed onto the surface to ensure good initial bond and exclude air. Adjacent rolls shall
overlap 50mm at sides and ends and well rolled with a firm pressure using a lap roller to ensure
complete adhesion and continuity between the layers. On high walls it may be necessary to batten
fix the membrane to prevent slippage.

C. Application of Protection Layer:

Single layer of non-woven, needle punched geotextile fibermat, 300 gm / m 2 loose laid over the
EPDM waterproofing membrane, overlapping adjoining sheets from 4.0” – 6.0”, or protect using
protection boards bonded to the membrane using adhesive or double sided protection tape.

5.3 Bentonite Waterproofing System

Bentonite sheets consist of a holding media (fabric, kraft board etc.) filled with high swelling
bentonite. Once in contact with water, bentonite swells up to 15 times its original volume and
retains the water (i.e. it does not shrink back to its original volume even if external water dries out).
When confined under pressure the swell is controlled, forming a dense impervious waterproofing
membrane. Bentonite sheets are used for waterproofing below grade structural slabs, concrete
caissons, shotcrete retention walls, zero clearance property line, backfilled concrete foundation and
retaining walls.

a. Surface Preparation:

 Concrete surfaces should be free of voids and sharp projections. Surface irregularities
should be removed before installation.
 Do not install in standing water, premature swelling will occur.
b. Panel Installation
Follow manufacturer’s instruction. For Volclay Panels (by CETCO) installed on existing retaining
walls, the manufacturer recommended the following: “Starting at a bottom outside corner of the
wall, bend Panel around the corner along the "Starter Line" (printed on Panel) with the kraft
board corrugations vertically oriented. Cut the Panel at the bottom along the "Starter Line" so
that the Panel can be extended onto the footing a minimum of 6" (150 mm). Secure Panels with
washerhead concrete fasteners along each edge and one or two fasteners in the center. Cut and
apply a Panel section at the footing corner base where the Panel does not cover. Then apply
< INSERT PROJECT REF # & TITLE HERE >

WATERPROOFING Date DD MMM YY Page 10 of 15

Bentoseal over the Panel section at the corner. After securing the corner Panel, install adjacent
Panels with corrugations (and print) horizontally oriented. Overlap all adjoining Panel edges a
minimum of 1-1/2" (38 mm) and extend onto footing a minimum of 6" (150 mm). Continue
horizontal placement until the next corner. At the next corner install the Panel with print vertical.
At the inside corners, apply a continuous 3/4" (18 mm) fillet of Bentoseal directly in the corner
prior to installing the Panels. Place Hydrobar Tubes tight against the Panel along the wall/footing
intersection at the bottom of the wall. "Butt" Hydrobar Tube ends together and tamp a shovel of
backfill over them immediately to prevent displacement. Replace any damaged or prehydrated
materials prior to backfilling. Begin the next course at the original outside corner by positioning
the Panel at the corner along the "Alternate Line" (printed on Panel) overlapping the previous
course a minimum 1-1/2" (38 mm). After securing the corner Panel, install adjacent Panels with
kraft board corrugations and print horizontally oriented. Overlap all adjoining Panel edges a
minimum of 1-1/2" (38 mm). Repeat Panel installation procedure to finished grade level. To
closely fit around penetrations, cut Panels parallel with the corrugations. Immediately seal open
Panel corrugation edge by applying a small amount of water with a wet cloth or sponge prior to
Panel installation. Trowel a minimum 1/2" (12 mm) thick layer of Bentoseal around penetrations.
Extend Bentoseal onto penetration and completely fill area between Panel edge and penetration.
Terminate Panels at finished grade with a rigid termination bar fastened 12" (300 mm) on center.
Embed top edge of Panels in 2" (50 mm) wide, by 1/2" (12 mm) thick layer of Bentoseal. A 12"
(300 mm) wide strip of UV resistant flashing material is also recommended to be installed over
the top edge of the Panels at grade. Backfill material should be compacted to 85% of Modified
Proctor density immediately following the application of each Panel course. Backfill to within 3"
(75 mm) of the top edge of the Panel. If backfill cannot be applied immediately, protect Type 1
Panels (non-coated) from precipitation with polyethylene sheeting. Remove sheeting prior to
backfilling. If backfill contains sharp or irregular material, cover Panels. with Protection Mat 10V
or Aquadrain® drainage composite to avoid damage during backfilling and compaction. Tie into
underslab waterproofing as required by overlapping the underslab waterproofing a minimum of
6" (150 mm). When a drain tile is required, install it below the top of the footing - not in direct
contact with the waterproofing.”
