4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation Move to fresh air if effects occur. If not breathing, give

artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Consult a physician.

Skin Contact Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15

minutes while removing contaminated clothing. Remove
residues with soap and water. Call a physician if irritation
persists.

Eye Contact Rinse immediately with water, also under the eyelids for at
least 15 minutes. Consult medical personnel.

Ingestion The decision of whether to induce vomiting or not should be

k
made by an attending physician. Never give fluids or induce
vomiting if patient is unconscious or is having convulsions.

a
Note to Physician No specified antidote. Supportive care. Treatment made on

b
judgement of the physician in response to reactions of the
patient.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

r d
o
Extinguishing Media
Water fog or fine spray. Carbon dioxide. Dry chemical.

N
Foam. Alcohol resistant foams (ATC Type) are preferred.
General purpose synthetic foams (including AFFF) or
protein foams may function, but will be less effective.

Hazardous combustion products

Under conditions of incomplete combustion or pyrolysis,

phenolics and carbon oxides may be evolved. The thermal
decomposition products therefore should be treated as
potentially hazardous substances and appropriate
precautions should be taken.

Protection of Fire fighters

Wear positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus

and protective fire fighting clothing (includes fire fighting
helmet, coat, trousers, boots and gloves).

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards

Container may rupture from gas generation in a fire

situation. Violent steam generation may occur upon
application of direct water stream to hot liquids. Dense
smoke is emitted when burned without sufficient oxygen.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal Precautions

Wear adequate personal protective equipment, see section

8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION.

Environmental Precautions

k
Contain liquid to prevent contamination of soil, surface

a
water or ground water. Flushing’s and wash waters must be
contained and prevented from entering into soil, waterways

b
and ground water. Large spills: Contain with dike.

d
Method Of Cleaning Up

r
Cover and soak up with a suitable material, such as: Sand,

o
polyethylene or polypropylene fibre. Collect in suitable and
properly labelled containers. Dispose of according to

N
applicable regulations; see Section 13, DISPOSAL
CONSIDERATIONS. Residual can be removed with
solvent. Solvents are not recommended for clean-up unless
the recommended exposure guidelines and safe handling
practices for the specific solvent are followed. Residual
product may be removed using steam or hot soapy water.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling Practice cares and cautions to avoid skin and eye contact.
Avoid breathing vapours of heated material. Wash thoroughly
after handling. Keep container closed.

Storage Store between 10°C and 35°C. Keep container tightly closed.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Exposure Guidelines
None established.

Engineering Controls
Good general ventilation should be sufficient for most
conditions.

Skin Protection
For brief contact, no precautions other than clean body-
covering clothing should be needed. Use gloves, impervious to
this material when prolonged or frequently repeated contact
could occur (Butyl Rubber, Nitrile, Neoprene, Ethyl Vinyl
Alcohol Laminate). Remove contaminated clothing no later

k
than the end of the work period and launder before reuse.

a
Eye/Face Protection
Use safety glasses. Where contact with this material is likely,

b
full face protection or chemical goggles are recommended
because eye contact may cause discomfort even though it is

d
unlikely to cause injury.

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY

Chemical Stability
Stable under normal storage conditions and use.

Conditions to Avoid
Excessive heating over long periods of time degrades the
product (causing discolouration). Avoid temperatures above
300°C. Potentially violent decomposition can occur above
350°C. Generation of gas during decomposition can cause
pressure in closed systems. Pressure build-up can be rapid.

Materials to Avoid
Acids, Amines, Bases, and Oxidising agents.

k
Reactivity
Not available.

a
Hazardous Polymerisation

b
Hazardous polymerisation will not occur by itself.

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

r d
Acute Toxicity
o
Ingestion

N
The oral LD50 for rats is expected to be >5 000 mg/kg. Single
dose oral toxicity is believed to be low. No hazards anticipated
from swallowing small amount incidental to normal handling
operations.

Skin Contact A single prolonged exposure is not likely to result in the

material being absorbed through skin in harmful amount. The
LD50 for skin absorption in rabbits is believed to be
>20 000mg/kg.

Inhalation Prolonged exposure is to be avoided.

Irritation Irritation to eyes and skin. PPE must be worn at all times.

Skin Repeated exposure may cause skin irritation.

Eyes May cause slight transient eye irritation. Corneal injury is

unlikely.

Sensitisation Has caused allergic skin reactions in humans.

Carcinogenicity Many studies have been conducted to assess the potential

carcinogenicity of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBPA) –
based epoxy resins. In one of these, a DGEBPA – based resin
(containing high levels of several impurities, including a known
animal skin carcinogen) was reported to produce a weak
carcinogenic response in the skin of one of two strains of mice
tested. Recent studies have suggested slight increases in two
systemic tumour types following repeated application of
certain DGEBPA-containing resins (or pure DGEBPA),
although the response was not uniform among practically
identical resins. Based on these data, and the other studies
which have not shown cancer, the cause-effect relationship
between DGEBPA-treatment and these tumour increases is
questionable indeed, a recent review of the available data by

k
the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has

a
concluded that DGEBPA is not classifiable as to its
carcinogenicity.
