For students to learn they need to know what is

expected of them and they need to know what success
looks like. Therefore, teachers must create and effectively
communicate clearly defined learning targets.
A Learning Target is a statement of intended
learning for students based on the standards. A
Learning Target specifies and unpacks the objective and
spells out what students will be able to do during and
after the lesson or lesson series. Learning Targets are in
student friendly language and are specific to the lesson for
the day, or span of days, and directly connected to
assessment.
With the new educational perspective, it requires teachers to visualize the
ideal graduates three or more years after completing the Basic Education. This
therefore necessitates understanding of the different taxonomies of learning.
In this module, you shall learn the characterization of learning, how to set
appropriate targets (competencies, objectives and outcomes) and examine the
different taxonomies of educational objectives.

At the end of the session, you are expected to:

Main Learning Outcome:
formulate appropriate learning objectives and outcomes that
are constructively aligned with national standards.
Sub-tasks:
(1) distinguish among competencies, objectives and outcomes;
(2) explain the different characteristics of objectives; and
(3) examine the present and emerging taxonomies.

A Competency is a general statement that describes the desired knowledge,

skills, and behaviors of a student graduating from a program (or completing a course).
Competencies commonly define the applied skills and knowledge that enable people to
successfully perform in professional, educational, and other life contexts.

A learning objective is a description of what the learner must be able to do upon

completion of an educational activity. A well-written learning objective outlines the
knowledge, skills and/or attitude the learners will gain from the educational activity
and does so in a measurable way.

An Outcome is a very specific statement that describes exactly what a student

will be able to do in some measurable way. There may be more than one measurable
outcome defined for a given competency.

To be useful, learning objectives should be SMART:

• Specific;
• Measurable;
• Attainable;
• Results-Focused/Oriented; and
• Time-Focused/Bound
Learning objectives focus your learning on specific areas and can help you
maximize your time spent in preparing the lesson.
Steps to writing learning objectives:
For each objective, answer the following three questions:
• What do you want to accomplish?
• How are you going to accomplish it? (What steps will you take to
accomplish your objective? What activities will you do? How will you acquire the
learning? Under what conditions will the learning occur?)
• How you will measure your objective? (What evidence will you have to
demonstrate that learning has taken place? What criteria will be used to evaluate
your evidence? Who will do the evaluation?)

❖ A Learning Target is a statement of intended learning for students based on

the standards. A Learning Target specifies and unpacks the objective and spells
out what students will be able to do during and after the lesson or lesson series.
❖ A true learning outcome is written so that it can be measured or assessed. It
focuses on what the student can do at end of a program (or course). Thus,
learning outcomes are the basis for an assessment program that focuses on what
a student can or should be able to do either upon completion of a course or upon
graduation from a program.
❖ A Competency is a general statement that describes the desired knowledge,
skills, and behaviors of a student graduating from a program (or completing a
course). A learning objective is a description of what the learner must be able
to do upon completion of an educational activity. An Outcome is a
very specific statement that describes exactly what a student will be able to do in
some measurable way. There may be more than one measurable outcome defined
for a given competency.
❖ The three domains of learning are cognitive, affective and psychomotor.
❖ Taxonomies in education such as Bloom’s is extremely important in the context
of education because it tells teachers a great deal about the order in
which they must teach so that they can get their students to succeed in higher
level thinking.

Using the indicated topic or subject matter, write the learning objectives for each
3 domains arranged from the simplest to the most complex level or category.

Identify one (1) learning competency from the K to 12 Curriculum Guide and:
(a) identify which learning domain it fits; and
(b) subtask (create learning objectives) the learning competency.

Rate your learning experience in using this module according to the following
scale.

Put a check mark on your response.
