Activity on Chapter One- Introduction
1. Give examples, of social functioning problems.
2. Explain the functions of social work. Give examples of how these functions relate to the ultimate goal of social work, ie., the enhancement of human social functioning. 3. Explain what constitutes the two main components of the social work profession. Give examples of issues and problems relating to these two components. 4. What other professions engage in direct helping relationships with people? Discuss the nature of their work and compare and contrast what they do with what trained social workers do. What conclusions can you draw from the discussion? Activity on Chapter Two- Historical Background 1. Identify the socio-civic movements that introduced group work in the Philippines and are still operating today. Compare and contrast their group programs and services in the past with those of today. 2. Discuss the developmental, socialization, and treatment-oriented goals behind social agency group programs. Based on what you know about the problems of Filipino clients, should only one of these goals be emphasized? Explain your answer. 3. What problems and situations confront Filipino social work clients today that call for the group mode of service? What specific kinds of group programs and services seem indicated? 4. List all the social work agencies that, to your knowledge, offer group-oriented programs and services. Classify these agencies/ programs according to the goals pursued - e.g., developmental, socialization, and treatment. Explain/ comment on your findings. Activity in Chapter Three- Uses of Groups 1. What social welfare settings in the country offer services to groups. Who are the persons involved in these services, and what exactly do they do? 2. Discuss the significant uses of groups in social work. Provide illustrations of each. 4. Explain in your own words the three concepts about how groups effect change. Provide, illustrations of each. 5. Comment on social work with groups in the country today in the context of the "uses of groups" and "how groups effect change" which you learned from this chapter.
