 In the Jewish community it is for boys only while in some traditional communities it is for both
boys and girls
 In the Jewish community it is done on the 8th day while in TAC it is done during adolescence age
 Its purpose in the Jewish community is to identify with Gods people while in the TAC it is to
promote one to adult life
 Among the Jewish the practice was commanded by God while in TAC it was done in obedience
to the ancestors
 The rite is not seasonal among the Jewish as is the case in TAC
 In TAC it is a gate to more responsibilities while among the Jewish one is too young for any
responsibility

 Abraham lived in the city of Ur near river Euphrates

 He lacked adequate knowledge on the identity of the God who was calling him

4. a)Outline seven reasons why Samuel was against Kingship in Israel


 It was seen as rejection of God as their king and leader
 In becoming like other nations the Israelites would lose their identity as a
covenant people
 Yahweh would reject them when they cried to him
 Israel would become like other nations who did not Know Yahweh
 Hereditary kingship would lead to oppression suffering and pain
 The King would introduce forced labour
 The king would grab people’s land for government use
 The king would force people to pay high taxes to the government

b) Identify seven factors that led to the division of the kingdom of Israel after the death of
Solomon

 Solomon had married many foreign wives who brought idols with them
 Solomon allowed his foreign wives to build high places of worship for idol gods
 Solomon worshiped idol gods
 Solomon overtaxed his subjects and oppressed them
 Solomon spent years and a lot of resources building his own palace and the temple-
projects that made him introduce forced labor in Israel
 Disaffection among the Israelites made them to support Jeroboam
 Rehoboam Solomon’s son and successor rejected the advice from the old men and
accepted the advice from the young men to rule harshly
 The readiness of Jeroboam to lead the rebellious tribe

5. a)Identify six effects of idolatry in Israel during the time of Prophet Elijah
 God raised prophets to bring Israel back to the covenant way of life
 There was persecution towards Yahweh’s prophets
 Baal prophets were brought to Israel
 There was corruption/social injustices/people rejected the covenant way of life
 The Israelite practiced syncretism
 There was drought in Israel for three and half years as a curse in Israel
 Israel lost her identity as a nation of God’s people
 A contest was held at Mt Camel to prove who the true God was
 Elijah fled the country and was sustained by God’s power during the period of the
drought

b) Describe the mount Camel contest with reference to 1 st Kings 18:17-40

 Prophet Elijah asked Ahab to assemble all the people at mount Camel
 The King summoned all the people include the Baal prophets at MT Camel
 Elijah told the people to choose between God and Baal
 He ordered for two bulls to be brought for the sacrifices
 Each party was to offer a sacrifice of a bull and the God who will send fire to consume
the sacrifice will be the true God of Israel
 Baal prophets were the first to offer their sacrifices
 They prayed to their god shouting and dancing around the alter fruitlessly
 Elijah then mocked them to shout louder for their god might be asleep, on a journey or
either he could not hear
 They continued to pray and cut themselves with knives but no fire
 When his time came, Elijah called the people together
 He repaired the abandoned alter of Yahweh, set up twelve stones each representing the
twelve tribes of Israel
 He dug a trench round the alter and poured water on the wood until it filled the trench
 He placed the sacrifice on the alter and asked the people to pour water on it
 He prayed to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to send fire to consume the sacrifice
 He fire was sent from heaven and it consumed the sacrifice
 The Israelites were amazed and acknowledged Yahweh as the God of Israel
 Elijah then ordered the killing of the Prophets of Baal
