Myers & Briggs Type Indicator

The Myers & Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment that makes
understanding the theory of psychological types more clear and useful to participants. It is a tool
for personal development, self-awareness, and humanistic improvement. The test was originally
developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers, with input from
Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung, who had similar yet more developed theories on personality
traits. The MBTI does not provide a concrete or denite description of an individual, but it is
regarded as one of the most accurate, valid, and reliable personality tests used in over 100
countries and in 29 languages.

The MBTI measures the personality types of

participants based on four dierent scales.
Each scale provides an assessment of a
dierent aspect of human personalities and an
overall personality type is given at the end of
the test. There are sixteen personality type
combinations that can be described in total.
The four categories which the Myers & Briggs
Type Indicator explores are:
1. How energy is directed and received by the
participant (Introversion/Extraversion)
2. How information is taken in
(Sensing/Intuition)

randomized so that no single personality
aspect is repeated twice in a row. At the end of
the test, the participant is asked to tally their answers based on a specied point scale to reveal
which personality type they are within a certain aspect. For instance, if questions that were
based on introversion/extraversion always suggested that the participant was more outgoing
through option B, and the participant answered with B more often, they are determined to be
more of an extrovert.

This lesson will focus on how the Myers & Briggs Type Indicator assesses the judging and
perceiving characteristics of psychological types. The aspect of human personalities which
determines how the outside world is approached is tested in a similar way to all other
personality aspects, through a series of questions and answers. The answers selected by the
participant gauges how they become aware of their surroundings and how they may choose to
respond in most situations.

Judging Personality
Individuals with the judging personality are very structured. They enjoy having a dened and
detailed plan laid out before they complete tasks or make decisions. Judging-oriented individuals
also prefer to have closure on a subject or experience ahead of time. Some common
characteristics or practices of judging-oriented individuals include:
• Having a course of action or plan decided ahead of time
• Being focused and task-oriented
• Being absolute in decision-making
• Working ahead or prioritizing work over leisure
• Working hard so that the individual does not have to rush in order to meet deadlines
• Sticking to plans, but sometimes nding it dicult to improvise or make adjustments

An example of an individual with a judging-type personality follows:

Perceiving Personality
Opposite of individuals with the judging
personality characteristic are those with a
perceiving personality. Individuals who
perceive tend to absorb more information
over a longer period of time and are more

time and nds work more enjoyable in the process. When Drew's boss, Matthew, assigns him
the largest project of the year, Drew immediately begins working. He faces challenges as they
are presented to him and adapts when factors do not fall out the way he intended. Drew thinks
of solutions and alternatives throughout his progression through the project and chooses the
best course of action as it seems appropriate. Drew is a perceiving individual because he did not
plan for any specic happening during his project, considered alternatives and adapted to
changes as they came, and was open to changing his work style if needed.
