CH03 - Sketching Geometry

Chapter 3 covers advanced sketching tools, including creating complex shapes, using editing tools like Trim and Extend, and managing constraints in 2D sketches. It also discusses advanced dimensioning techniques and customization of constraint settings to enhance design intent. The chapter concludes with practice exercises to apply the learned concepts.

Chapter 3: Additional Sketching Tools

✓ Create splines and advanced rectangle, circle, and slot shaped entities in 2D sketches.
✓ Use the Trim, Extend, and Mirror editing tools that are available in a sketch to edit and modify
sketched entities.
✓ Display the current degrees of freedom in a 2D sketch.
✓ Add and modify constraints in a 2D sketch to capture the required design intent.
✓ Customize constraint settings in a 2D sketch.
✓ Assign dimensions to a 2D sketch using advanced dimensioning techniques.
Advanced Sketched Entities
• Many entity types are available in the Create panel and the expanded drop-down lists.

The most recently selected

entity displays at the top of
each drop-down list.

Advanced Sketched Entities
Tangent or perpendicular arcs using a line:
1. Press and hold the left mouse button and drag.

Line tangent to two circles/arcs:

1. Click and hold the mouse button on one of the two circles.
2. Hold and drag to the next circle so that the tangent constraint is visible.
3. Release the mouse button to locate the tangent line.

Advanced Sketched Entities
Sketched Fillets and Chamfers
• In the Create panel, click (Fillet) or (Chamfer).

Fillets
Ensures that all fillets or
chamfers are driven by Chamfer
the initial dimension.

Advanced Sketched Entities
Snap Points
• Use Point Snaps in the context menu to locate entities in a sketch.

Construction Entities
• Click in the Format panel and select an entity.
• Used as a reference.
• Do not create solid geometry.
• Project as construction entities by pressing and
holding <Shift> and selecting (yellow dashed lines).

Basic Sketch Editing Tools
Trim
• Removes the segment to the nearest intersection in each direction from the selected point.

Portion under cursor

• If intersections occur in both directions, the center of the object can be removed.

Basic Sketch Editing Tools
Extend
• Extend continues an object to meet the next object in its path or to close an open sketch.

Select this line

to extend.

Dynamic Trimming and Extending

• Initiate the Trim command and drag the trimming line over entities to trim simultaneously.
• Initiate the Extend command and drag the extending line over entities to extend simultaneously.

Basic Sketch Editing Tools
Mirror
• Mirrors selected entities about a mirror line. Mirror line

• The mirror line can be:

• Part of the geometry that is selected to mirror
• Projected origin feature
• Projected model edge
• Straight sketched or construction lines

Adding and Modifying Sketch Constraints
• Constraints are applied when sketching or you can assign your own.
• To display constraints:
• Select a sketch entity to temporarily show constraints.
• Click in the Status Bar to show all constraints and to hide them.
• Press <F8> to display all constraints and <F9> to hide them.
• In the Constrain panel, click (Show Constraints) and select the entities.
• Click in the Status Bar to show DOF.
• To assign constraints, select the required constraint icon and select entities to constrain.
