Chapter 5 History Notes
1. What were some of the differing ideas about empire and colonialism within
England and the American colonies?
In England, some people wanted strict control over the colonies, while
others preferred a trade-based relationship. In the American colonies, many
embraced ideas of self-governance and equal rights, influenced by
Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke. Colonists also enjoyed a period of
“salutary neglect,” which made them feel entitled to more autonomy. These
differing views led to tensions and eventually the American Revolution.
England tried to raise money from the colonists mainly through taxes and
customs duties. They introduced the Stamp Act, which taxed printed
materials, and the Sugar Act, which targeted smuggling. The Townshend
Acts added taxes on imported goods like tea. They also enforced these taxes
strictly, which led to resistance and protests from the colonists.
The United States won the war with the help of strong leadership from
George Washington, support from France, and the use of guerrilla tactics.
They also had the advantage of fighting on their own land and had
widespread support from the colonists. The decisive victory at Yorktown was
a turning point that led to their independence.
5. In what ways did the Revolutionary War disrupt life for the people living in
North America?
The Revolutionary War disrupted life by dividing communities between
Patriots and Loyalists, causing conflicts and mistrust. Women took on new
roles, and Native Americans were caught in the conflict. The war led to
displacement, loss of lives and property, and economic problems like trade
disruptions and inflation. It also changed political structures and increased
political activism.
