Conditional sentences express hypothetical or uncertain situations and their

consequences. Here are the rules and usage:

Types of Conditional Sentences

1. Zero Conditional (Certainty): Used for universal truths or scientific facts.

- If + S+ present simple, ... S+ present simple.

- Example: "If you heat ice, it melts."

“If you mix blue with yellow, you will get green color”

2. First Conditional (Future Possibility): Used for future possibilities.

- If + S + present simple, S + will/won't + base verb.(V1)

- Example: "If it rains tomorrow, I'll take an umbrella."

“I won’t go to my friend’s party, if he doesn’t invite me.”

3. Second Conditional (Present/ Future Hypothetical): Used for unlikely or


present hypothetical situations.

- If + S + past simple, S + would/wouldn't + base verb.

- Example: "If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house."

The Fact: I don’t win the lottery so I don’t buy a house.

Fact: She forgets to call me, I get angry with her.

Conditional Sentence: If she didn’t forget to call me, I wouldn’t get angry with her.

4. Third Conditional (Past Hypothetical): Used for past hypothetical situations.

- If + S + past perfect, S + would/wouldn't have + past participle(V3)

- Example: "If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam."

The Fact: I didn’t study harder, so I didn’t pass the exam.

Fact: She gained weight, she didn’t obey the rules for diet.

Conditional sentence: If she had obeyed the rules for diet, she wouldn’t have gained
weight.

1. I don't have money, so I won't buy the ticket. (Jika saya memiliki uang...)
If I had money, I would buy the ticket
2. She doesn't speak English, so she can't communicate with foreigners. (Jika
dia berbicara Inggris...)
If she spoke English, she would be able/could communicate with foreigners
3. He doesn't study hard, so he fails the exam. (Jika dia belajar keras...)
If he studied hard, he won’t fail the exam,

1. Jika saya menang lotere, saya akan membeli rumah. (/First/Second/Third)


If I win the lottery, I will buy a house
If I won the lottery, I would buy a house
If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a house
2. Jika saya memiliki sayap, saya bisa terbang. (First/Second/Third)
If I had had wings, I could have flown
3. Jika saya tidak sakit, saya akan pergi ke sekolah. (First/Second/Third)
If I weren’t sick, I would go to school
