PERSONAL

AND
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
MATRIX (PPDM)
This is a self-placed matrix for an individual personal and professional
development, but it can also be applied as supporting team members
personal and professional development where leaders are not only
concerned about professional skill and competencies of their team
members but also emotional, spiritual and social skills.

WHAT IS MATRIX?

A matrix generally refers to a structured arrangement or system that

organizes elements in a way that allows for easy analysis or understanding.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE CREATION OF THIS MATRIX?

As a youth leader, I’m always asked for help when comes to self-
development and generally ask people: “where do you want be” or “who do
you see yourself in the next 5, 10, 15 years”, but one side of these questions
that I believe is missing, is the negative side: “what you don’t want?”.

Asking these negative questions does not only avoid deviation but also make
it clear what are the deviations. We humans live an incremental and dynamic
life so it’s important to have clear understanding of these deviations, not as
risks, but as possible ways to become XYZ and to achieve XYZ.

Relax! We don’t call it “deviations” in this matrix! Give it a try, to see if it makes
sense for you and it's something that you would use for self-development or
supporting team members personal and professional development.
In the next page I will show how to use and what it’s the structure of this
matrix.

@isaaccadete
HOW TO USE:

The matrix is based on four domains and 4 questions:

1. Spend time reflecting on each question for the four domains and provide
minimum 2 and maximum 4 simple and short answers.
2. Based on your answers, set SMART goals that combine all four domains.
3. Develop an easy and achievable a plan for your goals, addressing areas of
growth and learning, detailing:
a) Input: resources (such as money, infrastructures, tools)
b) Output: Certainties (C) and Assumptions (A):
i) C- HOW do you want and don’t want to make it

ii) C- WHAT do you want and don’t want to achieve(ownership/have)

iii) C- WHERE do you want and don’t want to go
iv) C- WHO do you want and don’t want to become
v) C- WHOM do you want and don’t want to count on*
vi) A- HOW you will and won’t make it
vii) A- WHAT you will and won’t achieve
viii) A- WHERE you will and won’t go
ix) A- WHO you will and won’t become
x) A- WHOM do you can and can’t count on*
Note that ASSUMPTIONS are not mandatory as CERTAINTIES and WHOM it’s also a non-
mandatory output as others, so it can be left out of answers.

4. Regularly review your progress and adjust your plan as needed.

Also think of WHOM as accountability partner to check on your track*

@isaaccadete
The value proposition of these questions is to approach the concept of “from
known to known” by applying, reinforcing, or building upon what is already
understood, and “from unknown to known”, discovery and learning new
things.
