THE INDEFINITE ARTICLE

The indefinite article are very essential in French speaking. They are used in almost all the sentences.

The indefinite article is the equivalent for a , an and some in French

Before a feminine word use une and for a or an .

Des is the plural form of une and un

UNLIKE IN English you will need to use a article before every single noun.

It is hoever important for one to understand that

1 indefinite articles are used with countable nouns

2 indefinite articles are placed directly infront of a noun or an adjective

3 indefinite articles should always agree with the noun in number and in gender.

In the masculine we use the indefinite article un for instance un bus , un garcon. In the feminine we use
the indefinite article une eg une tele or une fille. In the plural we use the indefinite article des eg des
filles , des garcon . with this particular indefinite article the gender of the noun is not put into
consideration. In other words this article is used for both male and female things.

Note that you can use the idefinite articles infront of unnamed , unidentified or unspecified noun as long
as they are countable.

Par example

Il ya un probleme -- there is a problem

Un chien une chienne des animaux

The indefinite article is used similarly to English however in French it is usually omitted with job titles

Eg Elle est prof – she is a teacher
