Setup:

Shuffle the cards Enemy (red) side up into a Deck. Draw 5 cards one at a time from the bottom
of the Deck to form two Quests. Keep all suits in both Quests visible. One Quest will have 3
Enemies and one will have 2. You can choose to make an Enemy part of a Quest as long as
1) the card’s suit does not match the top suit of the Quest
2) the Quest does not already have 3 cards
If an Enemy cannot be placed on either Quest, put it on top of the Deck and draw another Enemy
from the bottom.

Draw 3 cards one at a time from the bottom of the Deck, flip them over to their Hero (yellow)
side, and add them to your Party. Stack Heroes of matching suits with their skills (the bottom of
the card) visible.

Reserve space next to the Deck for an Encounter card and a Graveyard. Reserve space next to
your Party for Finished Quests, organized by suit.

Gameplay:
Take turns as follows.

1) Draw the top Enemy card and place it next to the Deck to be this turn’s Encounter.
2) Either Explore, Recruit, Fight, or Pass:
a. Explore [Match from a single Quest, including Skulls; Move to Finished
Quests]: Pick one of your Heroes (even one that’s not on top) and match all that
Hero’s skill icons to Enemy suits in a single Quest. Each skill icon must match a
different card in that Quest. Enemies with Skull icons can be matched. Move the
matched Enemy cards to the Finished Quest spaces, organized by suit. (If this
causes two cards of the same suit left behind in the Quest to be adjacent, you must
choose one to Kill.) Flip the chosen Hero to its Enemy side and place it on the
bottom of the Deck.
b. Recruit [Match from Quests, Encounter, and Deck, not including Skulls;
Move to Party]: Pick one of your Heroes (even one that’s not on top) and match
all that Hero’s skill icons to Enemy suits from either Quest, the Encounter, and/or
the top Enemy card of the Deck. Enemies with Skull icons cannot be matched.
Flip the matched Enemy cards to their Hero side and add them to your Party in
any order you choose. Flip the chosen Hero to its Enemy side and place it on the
bottom of the Deck.
c. Fight [Compare Hero Strength with Encounter; If Hero is Higher, add
Encounter to Party; If Lower, Kill Hero and add Encounter to Party; If
Equal, place Hero and Encounter on bottom of Deck]: Pick one of your Heroes
(must be on top). If the chosen Hero has a + icon, you may choose and add a
single other non-covered Hero as well. Compare your Heroes’ strength (number
in the top right) with the Encounter’s strength.
i. If the Heroes’ strength is higher than the Encounter’s, flip the Encounter
to its Hero side and add it to your Party.
ii. If the Heroes’ strength is lower than the Encounter’s, flip all participating
Heroes to their Enemy side and place them in the Graveyard. Then flip the
Encounter to its Hero side and add it to your Party.
iii. If the Heroes’ strength is equal to the Encounter’s, flip all participating
Heroes to their Enemy side and place them and the Encounter on the
bottom of the Deck in any order.
d. Pass: Do nothing
3) If the Encounter remains, resolve it by placing it on a Quest and then triggering its ability.
The chosen quest’s top Enemy cannot match the suit of the Encounter. If there is no such
Quest, Kill the Encounter and do not trigger its ability.
Some keywords on Encounters:
a. Kill: Move the card to the Graveyard
b. Gain: Flip the card to its Hero side and place it in your Party, obeying stacking
rules
c. Play: Place the card on a Quest, obeying stacking rules (top suit cannot match),
then trigger its ability. If placing the card is not possible, Kill the card.

Notes:

If you cannot match all skill icons on a Hero for an Explore or Recruit action, you cannot take
that action.
Your Party will have at most 4 stacks of Heroes, 1 for each suit. Any of your Heroes can Explore
or Recruit, but only the top cards on the stacks can Fight.
Two cards of the same suit can never be adjacent in a single Quest pile.
If all cards are removed from a Quest, that Quest cannot be restarted. You must continue the
game with only 1 Quest pile.
If you win and lose at the exact same moment, you win!

Defeat:

1) Starvation: You must take a card from the Deck but it is empty
2) Annihilation: Your Party has 0 cards
3) Defilement: The Graveyard has 3 or more cards
4) Hubris: A single Quest has 4 or more cards
5) Futility: All Quests have 0 cards

Victory:

If at least two stacks of suits in the Finished Quests area have 3 or more cards, you win!
