Chapter 1

Introduction

1.1 Project Description

In many different domains, electrical engineers evaluate, create, and test

complex and large-scale systems. This may include starting whole new initiatives
or improving and maintaining current systems. When a new development is in
progress, the most difficult part of a distribution engineer's job description appears.
The job of engineers is to create an economical and effective electrical distribution
system that guarantees a steady supply of electricity to every consumer.
An overview for a particular area's electrical distribution is presented in this
document. The design plan takes into account variables such electrical loads,
project size, and the distance between the development and principal power lines
and existing electrical substations.

1.2 Project Objectives

This project aims to design the substation and distribution system of city to:
• Identify the technical parameters and specification of the potential power
transformer.
• To determine the equipment and components needed for the design.
• To reach additional conclusion and recommendation in designing substation
and distribution systems.

1.3 Project Summary

The project will provide a load survey and graphs, the design of the secondary
distribution system, the design of the primary distribution system, and the
substation design. The load survey and graphs will assume conditions for
residential loads, commercial loads, and industrial loads, including their schedules
of usage throughout a 24-hour day. These graphs will serve as a guide for
comparing the different classes of residential (A, B, C), commercial (all types of
commercial), and residential (all types of residential) loads in the design of the
secondary distribution system, the required data includes the size of the distribution
transformer, location of common transformers, size of conductors, and voltage drop
calculation. These calculations only apply to 1-phase transformers. For the
substation design, the data from the previous chapters (2, 3, 4) will be used to
Page |7

determine the necessary information for the substation. This final design will
include the substation load graph, substation load factors, the size of the power
transformer, and fault calculations.

3.3 Size of Conductors

Sizes of conductors both primary and secondary depend to what

consideration we want to emphasize with. If we want the most
economical sizes, we could use Kelvin’s Law wile if we want that it
would not exceed the allowable voltage regulation at the farthest end of
the radial system, we could slightly sacrifice economics. Other
consideration we want to satisfy is the mechanical and electrical
limitations of conductors. Most of all the minimum requirements set by
the distribution utility where our project is situated. An example of this
requirements is on MERALCO that overhead conductor should not
carry higher than 75% of its rated capacity.

The maximum current that can flow on secondary conductor is

the maximum current that the transformer can produce.

So, we use 3/0 MCM bare ACSR. Looking on the left and right-

further analyze maximum current scenario that can occur.

3.4 Voltage Drop Calculation

ANSI Standard C as stipulated states that “For low voltage (< V), the
actual service voltage must lie within ±5% of nominal for continuous operation.
Any voltage deviation beyond these tolerances must be corrected.”

To lessen computations, we use the drop factor method since it has the same
orientation, sizes of wire, and operating voltage.

The following are formulas for solving the drop factor per kVA, per one
kilometer at Hz and 5% pf.
