Momentum and Impulse (1)

The document outlines a laboratory investigation on impulse and momentum, focusing on the effects of drop height on the impact force experienced by an egg. It presents experimental data showing the relationship between drop height, velocity change, and force of collision, along with analysis on why eggs break or remain safe upon impact. Recommendations for improving egg safety during falls include effective cushioning, even force distribution, and innovative design solutions.

Laboratory Work in Momentum and Impulse

Moreno, Jim Patrick M.

Topic: Impulse and Momentum

Objective:

 Create an investigation into the science behind objects that are colliding.
 Create a device that can reduce the impact force.

Applicable Simulation: the Physics Classroom (Egg Drop)

Procedure:

Control the details of the experiment (egg size, drop height, and type of landing surface). Change the
detail of the experiment based on the following conditions then click “Run Trial” to start the
experiment.

Table 1. Impact Data for First Condition

Drop Height Velocity Change Time of fall Force of collision Result (Write
detail on the
condition of the
egg after impact)
1 meter 4.4 m/s 0.080 s 2.2 N Safe
5 meters 9.9 m/s 0.060 s 6.6 N Safe
10 meters 14.0 m/s 0.040 s 14.0 N Safe

Table 2. Impact Data for Second Condition

Drop Height Velocity Change Time of fall Force of collision Result (Write
detail on the
condition of the
egg after impact)
1 meter 4.4 m/s 0.080 s 4.4 N Safe
5 meters 9.9 m/s 0.060 s 13.2 N Safe

10 meters 14.0 m/s 0.040 s 28.0 N Safe

Table 3. Impact Data for Third Condition

Drop Height Velocity Change Time of fall Force of collision Result (Write
detail on the
condition of the
egg after impact)
1 meter 4.4 m/s 0.040 s 8.8 N Safe
5 meters 9.9 m/s 0.030 s 26.4 N Fractured
10 meters 14.0 m/s 0.020 s 56.0 N Broken

Analysis:

1. Using the impact data of your experiment what do you think are the reasons for a falling egg
to break?
High impact force: If the egg hits a hard surface, the force exerted exceeds the shell's
structural integrity.

Insufficient cushioning: Lack of materials to absorb impact energy results in the egg taking
the full force.

High fall height: The greater the height, the higher the velocity and kinetic energy upon
impact.

Uneven force distribution: If the egg lands on a small contact point, stress is concentrated in
one area, leading to cracks.

Shell fragility: Natural variations in shell thickness and strength affect resistance to impact.

2. Using the impact data of your experiment what do you think are the reasons for a falling egg
not to break?

Effective cushioning materials: Foam, bubble wrap, or other soft materials absorb impact
energy gradually.

Even force distribution: A design that spreads impact force evenly reduces stress on any
single point of the egg.

Reduced fall velocity: Parachutes, air resistance, or gradual deceleration devices slow
down the fall.

Proper orientation: If the egg lands on its side or broader surface, it has better resistance
compared to landing on the tip.

Elastic materials: Materials with bounce-back properties help to dissipate energy rather
than transfer it to the egg.

3. If a jumbo egg will fall again on a foam box at a height of 10 meters, what do you think
should be added to the foam box for the egg to be safe after impact? Draw and explain your
design.
Multi-layer padding: Add multiple layers of foam with varying densities (soft outer layers,
denser inner layers) to progressively slow down the impact.

Suspension system: Use elastic bands or a net inside the box to suspend the egg in the
middle, preventing direct contact with any surface.

Air pockets: Incorporate air cushions or inflated balloons around the egg to dissipate energy.

Egg capsule: Place the egg inside a lightweight, shock-absorbing capsule to add an extra
layer of protection.
