ENCOURAGING INTRINSIC MOTIVATION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE MOTIVATION IN PILAR RURAL HIGH SCHOOL
Our pursuit of knowledge is driven by two different forces. Intrinsic motivation is our desire to
learn while extrinsic motivation is learning for external awards or punishment. Knowing the
different impact of this two motivation in promoting academic success of students is still remain
unclear and debatable.
Recalling my high school days, i’ve encounter different types of teachers. Our male teacher uses
positive motivation in encouraging us to love learning process. On the other hand, our female
teacher prefers to use criticism and threath. Her negative method such using criticism and threat
sometimes help us to love the process of learning , but have long term impact in our overall well-
being and academic sucess was lesser than the former one. This difference point out the need for
a comparative analysis of this two different approaches.
Existing research on reinforcement techniques present opposing findings. While positive
motivation quarantee increased intrinsic motivation, the role of negative motivation remains
unclear. Some researchers suggest that negative motivation can be effective for students in a
short time , but can still have negative effects on students well-being and engagement. The goal
of this study is to comapare the effectiveness of negative and positive motivation in promoting
intrinsic motivation in Pilar Rural High School. By comparing the effect of positive and negative
motivation will find out how this two different approaches impact the student life of Pilar Rural
High School students. This findings can also contribute in education by promoting a more
positive and productive learning and teaching process for high school students and teachers.
