Worksheet (Simile & Metaphor)

SIMILES

A simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced

with the words “like” or “as”.

They help in giving a person a clear idea of what you are trying to say. For
example, if your grandmother has very white hair and you say the dress
you bought is as white as your grandmother’s hair, the person to whom you
are saying this meaningless as the person may have not seen your
grandma .Hence it’s a meaningless comparison.

It would be better to say the dress is as white as milk because everyone is

familiar with milk and its colour.

Some common similes are:-

As agile as a monkey As fresh as a daisy

As big as an elephant As good as gold

As blind as a bat As high as a kite

As bright as a button As hungry as a bear

As clear as a crystal As busy as a bee

As cunning as a fox As cute as a baby

As delicate as a flower As different as chalk from cheese

As dry as a bone As easy as ABC

As fit as a fiddle

As gentle as a lamb

As happy as a clown

As hoarse as a crow

As clean as a whistle

As stubborn as a mule

As deaf as a doorpost

Like a red rag to a bull

As pretty as a picture

As cold as ice

METAPHOR

A metaphor is one kind of figurative language.

It makes a direct comparison of two unlike things. You can tell the
difference between a metaphor and a simile because a simile uses the
words “like” or “as”, and a metaphor does not. Metaphors often use a
form of the verb “to be”. The verb can be in the past tense (was, were),
the present tense (am, is, are), or future tense (will be).
Have you ever had to do a chore you thought was so big you would
never finish it?
You can use a metaphor to describe it!
The laundry was a mountain on the couch, and I had to fold it all!
Connecting the laundry to a mountain, something understood to be
huge, emphasizes the fact that the chore is a large one.

Read the sentences below. Explain what the metaphor compares,

and why.
1. My dad is a bear in the morning before he drinks his coffee!
_____________ is being compared to __________________
because_____________________________________________.

2. The wind was an angry witch, howling across the night sky.
_________________ is being compared to _________________

3. When it was her turn to dance, Melissa was a graceful butterfly flitting
across the stage.
__________________ is being compared to __________________
because _______________________________________________.

4. Steven’s angry words were bullets that hit Greg right in his heart.
