2- Write in terms of simpler logarithms.𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙 ( 3 𝑥𝑥 4 𝑦𝑦 −7 )

Solution/
So, we’re being asked here to use as many of the properties as we can to reduce
this down into simpler logarithms. So, here is the work for this problem.
𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(3𝑥𝑥 4 𝑦𝑦 −7 ) = 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(3) + 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(𝑥𝑥 4 ) + 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(𝑦𝑦 −7 )
𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(3𝑥𝑥 4 𝑦𝑦 −7 ) = 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(3) + 4𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(𝑥𝑥) − 7𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙(𝑦𝑦)

3- Write log 4 5 in terms of simpler logarithms.
𝑦𝑦 2 √𝑧𝑧
Solution/
( 𝑥𝑥 − 4) 1
log 4  5  = log 4 (𝑥𝑥 − 4) − log 4 𝑦𝑦 2 𝑧𝑧 5
𝑦𝑦 2 √𝑧𝑧
1
= log 4 (x − 4) − (log 4 (y 2 ) + log 4 (z 5 )
1
= log 4 (x − 4) − 2log 4 (y) + log 4 (z)

4- Find all the solutions to 23 − 8 𝑤𝑤 − 7 = 11 .
Solution/
ln(23−8𝑤𝑤 ) = ln(18)
(3 − 8𝑤𝑤) ln(2) = ln(18)
ln(18)
3 − 8𝑤𝑤 =

Calculus I Civil Engineering

𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 3 + 6
𝑥𝑥 = 𝑦𝑦 3 + 6
𝑥𝑥 − 6 = 𝑦𝑦 3
3
𝑦𝑦 = √𝑥𝑥 − 6
3
𝑅𝑅 −1 (𝑥𝑥) = √𝑥𝑥 − 6
Finally, compute either ( 𝑅𝑅 ∘ 𝑅𝑅−1 ) ( 𝑥𝑥 ) 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ( 𝑅𝑅−1 ∘ 𝑅𝑅 ) ( 𝑥𝑥 ) to verify our
work.
( 𝑅𝑅−1 ∘ 𝑅𝑅 )( 𝑥𝑥 ) = 𝑅𝑅−1 [𝑅𝑅(𝑥𝑥)]
3
= (𝑥𝑥 3 + 6) − 6
3
= 𝑥𝑥 3
= 𝑥𝑥
So, we got x out of the composition and so we know we’ve done our work
correctly.

6- Find the equation of the line through (− 7,2) and is parallel to the line
3 𝑥𝑥 − 14 𝑦𝑦 = 4
Solution/
first, we need to get the slope of our new line, i.e. the line through the point (−
7 , 2 ) . We know this line is parallel to the line 3 x − 14 y = 4 and so must have
the same slope as the second line. Therefore, all we need to do is put the
equation of the second line into slope-intercept form and get its slope.
3𝑥𝑥 − 14𝑦𝑦 = 4
14𝑦𝑦 = 3𝑥𝑥 − 4
3 2
𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 −
14 7
3
𝑚𝑚2 =
14
So, the new line must have slope of
3
𝑚𝑚1 = 𝑚𝑚2 =
14
3 3 3 7
𝑦𝑦 = 2 + (𝑥𝑥 − (−7)) = 2 + (𝑥𝑥 + 7) = 𝑥𝑥 +
14 14 14 2

Solution/

Calculus I Civil Engineering

to do this problem we need to complete the square on the x and y terms. To

help with this we’ll first get the number on the right side and group the x and y
terms as follows. 𝑥𝑥 2 + 14 𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 2 − 8 𝑦𝑦 = − 56
𝑥𝑥 2 + 14𝑥𝑥 + 49 + 𝑦𝑦 2 − 8𝑦𝑦 + 16 = −56 + 49 + 16
(𝑥𝑥 + 7)2 + (𝑦𝑦 − 4)2 = 9
So, we have the equation in standard form and so we can quickly identify the
radius and center of the circle.

Radius : r=3 Center : (−7,4)

8- Determine the domain of the following function.

8𝑡𝑡 − 24
𝑔𝑔(𝑡𝑡) = 2
𝑡𝑡 − 7𝑡𝑡 − 18
For this problem, all we need to avoid is division by zero. We will get division
by zero at,
𝑡𝑡 2 − 7 𝑡𝑡 − 18 = 0 → ( 𝑡𝑡 − 9 )( 𝑡𝑡 + 2 ) = 0 → 𝑡𝑡 = − 2 , 𝑡𝑡 = 9
