5- Find the inverse for 𝑅𝑅 ( 𝑥𝑥 ) = 𝑥𝑥 3 + 6 . Verify your inverse by computing one
or both of the compositions.
Solution/
𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 3 + 6
𝑥𝑥 = 𝑦𝑦 3 + 6
𝑥𝑥 − 6 = 𝑦𝑦 3
3
𝑦𝑦 = √𝑥𝑥 − 6
3
𝑅𝑅 −1 (𝑥𝑥) = √𝑥𝑥 − 6
Finally, compute either ( 𝑅𝑅 ∘ 𝑅𝑅−1 ) ( 𝑥𝑥 ) 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ( 𝑅𝑅−1 ∘ 𝑅𝑅 ) ( 𝑥𝑥 ) to verify our
work.
( 𝑅𝑅−1 ∘ 𝑅𝑅 )( 𝑥𝑥 ) = 𝑅𝑅−1 [𝑅𝑅(𝑥𝑥)]
3
= (𝑥𝑥 3 + 6) − 6
3
= 𝑥𝑥 3
= 𝑥𝑥
So, we got x out of the composition and so we know we’ve done our work
correctly.

6- Find the equation of the line through (− 7,2) and is parallel to the line
3 𝑥𝑥 − 14 𝑦𝑦 = 4
Solution/
first, we need to get the slope of our new line, i.e. the line through the point (−
7 , 2 ) . We know this line is parallel to the line 3 x − 14 y = 4 and so must have
the same slope as the second line. Therefore, all we need to do is put the
equation of the second line into slope-intercept form and get its slope.
3𝑥𝑥 − 14𝑦𝑦 = 4
14𝑦𝑦 = 3𝑥𝑥 − 4
3 2
𝑦𝑦 = 𝑥𝑥 −
14 7
3
𝑚𝑚2 =
14
So, the new line must have slope of
3
𝑚𝑚1 = 𝑚𝑚2 =
14
3 3 3 7
𝑦𝑦 = 2 + (𝑥𝑥 − (−7)) = 2 + (𝑥𝑥 + 7) = 𝑥𝑥 +
14 14 14 2

7- Determine the radius and center of the following circle.
𝑥𝑥 2 + 𝑦𝑦 2 + 14𝑥𝑥 − 8𝑦𝑦 + 56 = 0
