Definition of haiku:
*It's only three lines long, and each line has a
specific number of syllables ( 5, 7, and 5).
* Focused on nature: It often talks about natural
things, like trees, flowers, animals, or the seasons.
* It uses simple words and imagery to create a vivid
picture in your mind
* haiku does not have rhyme scheme

1. it all started with a longer poem called

"renga."which multiple poets would take turns
writing verses to create a long chain of linked
poems. The first three lines, called a "hokku," were
like a starter for the whole poem.
2. Over time, the "hokku" became its own thing. A
famous poet named Matsuo Bashō made "hokku"
poems really popular in the 17th century. He loved
simple moments in nature, like a frog jumping into
a pond, and made them beautiful and meaningful.
He is famous for his contributions to haiku.
3. In the late 1800s, another poet named Masaoka
Shiki gave the "hokku" a new name: "haiku." This
marked the start of haiku as a distinct form of
poetry.
4. Haiku spread beyond Japan in the 20th century,
with poets in other countries writing their own haiku
poems. Even though they don't always follow the
traditional rules, they still capture the essence of
haiku: short, simple, and focused on nature and
everyday life.

The teacher will show an example of haiku poem
