Lecture 5 PRESENTATION EM 2023

The document discusses the resultant of coplanar forces, detailing various force systems including concurrent, non-concurrent non-parallel, and parallel force systems. It provides formulas for calculating moments, resolving forces, and determining resultant forces and their intercepts. Additionally, it includes examples and problems to illustrate the application of these concepts in mechanical engineering.

Parallel for system

Non-Concurrent Non-Parallel Force System
• To calculate resultant of such force system, O1 F
first we need to understand moment.
• A moment on a body tends to cause it to d1
turn or rotate. d2
• Moment is simply defined as product of
force, and perpendicular distance between O2
the line of action of force and the axis of Moment @ pt. O1 = F X d1 (CCW)
rotation of the body. Moment @ pt. O2 = F X d2 (CW)

• Moment of Couple: Figure B F

• A couple is formed by two parallel forces
having equal magnitude and opposite d
direction, and separated by a finite
distance. F

• The magnitude of couple is given as
• C=FXd
Non-Concurrent Non-Parallel Force System
• To calculate Resultant, resolve all the y
forces along X and Y direction F1 F1Sinθ F2
• For e.g., F1: F1X = F1Cos(1),
θ1
F1Y = F1Sin(1) F1Cosθ
• Find σ 𝐹𝑋 and σ 𝐹𝑌 . θ
• Apply Sign convention for addition of Y
forces O

• For e.g., RHS +Ve,  +Ve x

• To find the X - intercept and Y - intercept of the resultant, R, calculate
moment of all forces about origin (σ 𝑀) y
• Apply sign convention to calculated σ 𝑀

Resolution of a force into force couple system
• Resolution of force into equivalent: force – couple system at B
• M = Rxd, is the moment of the force system about any point, B

• Resultant, 𝑅 = ↓ +𝑣𝑒 σ 𝐹 = − 𝐹1 + 𝐹2 + 𝐹3 − 𝐹4
• Calculate, moment about O Xd
• Assume sign convention, e.g. clockwise +ve
σ 𝑀@𝑂
• The location of resultant from O, d= σ𝐹
