1. A cylindrical resistor element on a circuit board dissipates 0.

6 W of power,
the resistor is 1.5 cm long and has a diameter of 0.4 cm. assuming heat to be
transformed uniformly from all surfaces determine (a) the amount of heat
this resistor dissipates from all surfaces during 24 hours period. (b) the heat
flux and (c) the fraction of the heat dissipated from the top and the bottom of
the resistor.
2. Consider a 150 W incandescent lamp the filament of the lamp is 5cm long
and has a diameter of 0.5 mm, the diameter of the glass pulp of the lamp is 8
cm. determine the heat flux in W/m2 at (a) on the surface of the filament. (b)
on the surface of the glass pulp and (c) calculate how much it cost per year
to keep this lamp working for 8 hours a day every day if the unit of
electricity 0.08 $/ kwh.

3. The inner and outer surfaces of a 0.5 cm thick, 2m * 2m window glass in

winter are 10 ℃ and 3 ℃ respectively, if the thermal conductivity of the
glass is 0.78 W/m. k determine the amount of heat lost in a period of 5 h.
what would be your answer if the glass were 1 cm thick.
4. An aluminum pan whose thermal conductivity is 237 W/m. ℃ has a flat
bottom with a diameter of 10 cm and thickness of 0.4 cm. heat is transferred
steadily to the boiling water on the pan through its bottom at a rate of 800 W,
if the inner surface of the bottom at 105 ℃ determine the temperature of the
outer surface of the bottom of the pan.
5. In a certain experiment cylindrical samples of diameter 4 cm and a length of
7 cm are used. The two thermocouples in each sample are place 3 cm apart
after initial transients the electrical heater is observed to draw 0.6 A at 110 V
and both differential thermometers read a temperature difference of 10 ℃
determine the thermal conductivity of the sample.
6. Consider a man standing in a room, the inner surface of the walls, the floor
and the ceiling are observed to be in average temperature of 12 ℃ in winter
and 23 ℃ in summer. Determine the rate of heat transfer by radiation
between this person and the surrounding surfaces in winter and summer. The
outer surfaces average temperature, emissivity and the temperature of the
person are 1.6 m2, 0.95 and 32 ℃ .
7. A 40 cm long, 800 W electric resistance heating element with diameter 0.5
cm and surface temperature 120 ℃ is immersed in 75 kg of water initially at
20 ℃ . Determine how long it will take the heater to raise the temperature of
the water to 80 ℃ also determine the heat transfer coefficient at the
beginning and the end of the heating process.
8. Consider steady heat transfer between two large parallel plates at constant
temperature of T1= 290 K and T2 = 150 K that are L = 2 cm apart assuming
surface to be black. Determine the rate of heat transfer per unit area between
the two plates assuming the gap between the plates is (a) filled with
atmospheric air, (b) evacuated, (c) fiber glass insulation and (d) filled with
super insulation with thermal conductivity of 0.00015 W/m. ℃ .

℃ the convention heat transfer coefficient between the base surface and the
surrounding air is 35 W/m2. ℃ and the base emissivity is 0.6 and the surface
area is 0.02 m2 determine the temperature at the base of the iron.
