Math 1 Assignment 2

The document is an assignment for B.Tech 1st Semester Math I, covering topics such as the Mean Value Theorem (LMVT), Rolle's Theorem, and various proofs and expansions related to logarithmic and trigonometric functions. It includes specific problems to solve, demonstrating the application of theorems and series expansions. The assignment also requires the verification of mathematical limits and inequalities.

Assignment II (Math I)

B.Tech 1st Semester (2024-25)

1. Describe LMVT. What is its geometrical interpretation? Show that Rolle's Theorem is a special case of
LMVT.

2. Using LMVT prove the following results:

(a) If the derivative of a function vanishes for all values of 𝑥 in an interval, then the function must be a
constant function,

(b) If two functions 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) have the same derivative for all values of 𝑥 in an interval, then they
differ only by a constant in that interval,

(c) A function whose derivative is positive for every value of 𝑥 in an interval, then that function is
monotonically increasing in that interval,

(d) A function whose derivative is negative for every value of 𝑥 in an interval, then that function is
monotonically decreasing in that interval.

3. Verify Rolle’s Theorem for the ( 𝑥 − 𝑎)𝑚 ( 𝑥 − 𝑏)𝑛 in [a, b] where 𝑚 and 𝑛 are positive integers.

4. If 𝑓 (𝑥) = log (1+ 𝑥), 𝑥 >0, then show that log (1+ 𝑥) = 𝑥 − 2
+ 3(1+𝜃𝑥)3 , 0 < 𝜃 < 1.

𝑥2 𝑥3
Hence prove that: log (1 + 𝑥) < 𝑥 − 2
+ 3
𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 > 0

5. Expend 𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑛′ 𝑠 𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 , 𝑜𝑟 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒, 𝑢𝑝 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑥 4 .

6. Explain log 𝑥 in powers of (𝑥 -1) and hence evaluate log (1.1) correct to 4 decimal places.

7. If 𝑓, Ø , and 𝛹 are continuous on [a, b] and derivable on (a, b) , then show that there exists a point
c  (a, b) such that

𝑓(𝑎) ∅(𝑎) 𝛹(𝑎)

| 𝑓(𝑏) ∅(𝑏) 𝛹(𝑏) | = 0
𝑓 ' (𝑐) ∅ ' (𝑐) 𝛹 ' (𝑐)

8. If 𝑎𝑜 + 2
+-----+ 𝑛−1
𝑛
𝑛
+ 𝑛+1 = 0, 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑖′ 𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑠 , 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

𝑎𝑜 + 𝑎1 𝑥+. . . … +𝑎𝑛 𝑥 𝑛 = 0 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑖𝑛 (0, 1).

9. Show that |𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑏 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑎| ≤ |𝑏 − 𝑎|.

10. Use Taylor’s series expansion to compute the value of cos32  , correct to four decimal places.

11. Show that log[𝑥 + √1 + 𝑥 2 ] = 𝑥 − 1 + (32 . 12 ) − (52 . 32 . 12 ) + −−−
3! 5! 7!

12. Show that

𝑥 𝑎 −𝑎𝑥 1−𝑙𝑜𝑔(𝑎)
(i) lim 𝑥 𝑥 −𝑎𝑎 = 1+log (𝑎)
𝑥→𝑎
1
(ii) lim ( 𝑥 − 𝑐𝑜𝑡𝑥) = 0
𝑥→0
(iii) lim ( 𝑥 − 𝑎)𝑥−𝑎 = 1
𝑥→𝑎
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑥 12 1
(iv) lim ( )𝑥 = 𝑒 3
𝑥→0 𝑥

(v) lim ( − 𝑐𝑜𝑡 2 𝑥) = 3
𝑥→0 𝑥 2
