5 Plan a build and hold trajectory where the kick-off depth is at 600m and the target
bull eye is 1700 m from the surface location at a TVD of 2500 m. Use a rate of build
20/30 m. Your plan should include the following: maximum inclination angle reached,
measured depth to the end of the build and to the target, horizontal departure to the
end of the build and at TVD’S of 900, 1500 and 2100 m, measured depth at TVD’S
of 900, 1500 and 2100 m.
6 Plan a directional program using a build, hold and drop trajectory path for which the
kick-off depth is 945 m and the maximum required departure is 640 m. Rate of build
should be 20/30 m and rate of drop should be 20/30 m i) If TVD is 3109 m where the
hole returns to vertical, what is the maximum inclination reached? ii) How much
casing will you have to purchase for a well with a TVD bottom hole target of 3108
m? iii) How long is the hold section? iv) If the drilling plan calls for an intermediate
string to be run to a TVD of 2502 m, how much casing is needed, and what is the
horizontal departure at the casing shoe?

Tutorial: 2
1. Derive the build, hold and drop relationship

θ=tan
−1
(
D 4 −D 1
r 1 +r 2− X 4 )
−cos
{( r 1+ r 2
D 4 −D 1 )
sin tan
−1
[ (D 4 −D 1
r 1 +r 2 −X 4 )]}
For r1 +r2 > X4 and r1<X3. Also derive the equation necessary to calculate the measured depth and
horizontal departure at any TVD.
2. Plan a directional program using a build, hold and drop trajectory path for which the kick-off depth is
950 m and the maximum required departure is 650 m. rate of build should be 20/30 m and rate of
drop should be 20/30 m i) If TVD is 3110 m where the hole returns to vertical, what is the maximum
inclination reached? ii) How much casing will you have to purchase for a well with a TVD bottom
hole target of 3110 m? iii) How long is the hold section? iv) If the drilling plan calls for an
intermediate string to be run to a TVD of 2500 m, how much casing is needed, and what is the
horizontal departure at the casing shoe?
3. Derive the build, hold and drop relationship

θ=180−tan
−1
( D 4 −D 1
X 4 −( r 1 +r 2 ) ) −cos
{( r 1 +r 2
D 4 −D 1 ) [ (
sin tan
−1 D 4 −D 1
X 4 −( r 1 + r 2 ) )]}
For r1 +r2 > X4 and r1<X3. Also derive the equation necessary to calculate the measured depth and
horizontal departure at any TVD.

4. Write all the modified equations for a build, hold, drop and hold i.e. “s” and derive all the
relationships to calculate horizontal departures, measured depths and inclination angle. Make an excel
chart considering 20, 30, 40 and rest as the % variation of total depth 2000 m.
PE306: Advance Drilling Technology
Tutorial: 3 Excel spread sheet

1. Using excel spread sheet generate family of curve for 10, 20 per 30 m of build up rate between true
vertical depth of 500 m and horizontal deviation of 350 m. There by draw show measurement along
the drilled length.
2. Fit various curve between a point (0,0,0) and (1000,500, 1) using mathematical relation ship
Z=f(x,y); Z=f(coshx,y); Z=f(lnx,y); Z=f(ex,y); Z=f(RND(x),y);

3. For a linear variation of z generate rand function in x and y and plot.

4. Generate a 3-D chart for the drilling bit traversing 20% in vertical direction, 20% in build of section
and rest in the horizontal section. Let TVD is 2000m and bur is 20/30 m.

1. An offshore discovery has been made under an active shipping lane as shown in the figure below.
Further seismic work has defined the anticline structure as being almost completely under the
shipping lane. You cannot locate any drilling structure within the shipping lane. Reservoir analysis
dictates drilling the structure with the four bottom hole locations indicated on the plot. Your company
owns blocks 3, 4, and 5. You have permission to drill anywhere outside the shipping lane from blocks
3, 5, 8 and 10. It is your assignment to determine the best economics to develop this field.

The first part of the study is to determine the economics of different approaches to drilling wells 1, 2,
3 and 4 i.e. whether to use semi submersible and drill some or all of the wells for sub sea completions
or to set a platform. Attached table gives the various conditions for cases 1, 2, 3.
Figure 2 summaries the results from the discovery well. Determine whether you would set a platform
to drill all wells, set a platform to drill some of the wells and drill the others with a movable drilling
vessels and complete them sub sea, or drill all the wells with a movable drilling vessel and complete
them sub sea. You must do the following:
A Determine the surface location for each well
B Calculate the trajectory for each well
C Calculate the casing cost on the basis of setting 508 mm surface casing to 270 m TVD,
intermediate 346 mm casing to cover the build section and 244 mm casing to cover the over pressured
interval 259 m TVD and 178 mm casing to total depth. Below is the cost of the casing.
Siz Cost
e $/m
mm
508 315
346 222
244 135
178 87

D Using the information given in the table , determine the time needed to drill each well for each case.
Maximum inclination is 700 for case 1, 800 for case 2 and 600 for case 3. Dm is m.
Case 1 Time to drill= 48x10-3 Dm -91 (maximum inclination factor)
Case 1 Time to drill= 39x10-3 Dm -95 (maximum inclination factor)
Case 1 Time to drill= 45x10-3 Dm -42 (maximum inclination factor)

1. If a 450 mm bit requires 7220x10-3 kJ torque to drill at 7.7 m/hr, what is the required pressure drop
across 3 stage half lobe with 158 cm rotor pitch, 28.6 mm eccentricity and 116 mm diameter?
(Hint:T.=qp, q=nrnstPrA, A=2edr)
2. What are torque, power, pressure drop and bit speed of a 178 mm, 200 stage turbine operating at 1.1,
1.3,1.7 m3/min for a mud weight of 1078 and 1917 kg/m3
3. What are the overall power, torque and bit speed of a combination 165 mm PDM and a 178 mm
turbine that has two connected shafts? The pump rate is 1.25m3/min and the mud weight is 1198
kg/m3.
4. You have just completed the well No.1 to 15,840 ft. This is the first well in a total of 10 to be drilled
from a man-made island. While you are planning the second well, a vendor tries to persuade you to
drill the second well from a surface to total depth using a PDM. Determine whether this would be
economical by analyzing the data from this well and using the concepts previously developed.
Analyze only the actual drilling data, ignore the intervals cored. The round trip time is 1.1 times depth
and rig cost is $47, 000/day.
Three PDM types are given along with the corresponding ratings. This information is provided as a
possible solution, but it may be wise to analyze other types of PDM’s and their corresponding
performances. The choice of bits is not limited to those previously used.
