AGE PROBLEMS ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON TOPICS IN IBPS. THE NUMBER OF QUESTIONS ASKED IN THE
EXAMINATION ARE 1 OR 2.

Important Formulas on "Problems on Ages":

If the current age is a, then n times the age is n xa

If the current age is a, then age n years later/hence = a + n.
If the current age is a, then age n years ago = a - n.
The ages in a ratio a : b will be ax and bx.
If the current age is a, then 1/n of the age is a/n
Example: Jan is twice as old as Jake . The sum of their ages is 5 times jake’s age less by 48. So how old are
Jan and Jake?

Answer :

Step 1: jan : jake = x : y = 2:1 => x = 2 y

Step 2: x +y = 5y – 48

Y =24 years and x = 48 y

Example: The ratio of mother age to his son’s age is 7 : 3 . The product of their ages is 756 . The ratio of
their ages after 6 years will be?
Answer: Step 1 : Let the present ages of the mother and son be 7x and 3x years respectively .

Then, 7x X 3x = 756
21×2 = 756

x2 = 36
x=6

Step 2 : Required ratio = (7x + 6 ) : ( 3x + 6 ) = 48 : 24 = 2 : 1 .

years hence and Viji's age 4 years ago. Then what will be the ratio of Jothi's age 4 years ago and Viji's age 4 years
hence?
Answer:
Let the present age of Jothi and Viji be 13X and 11X respectively.
Given, Jothi's age 4 years hence and Viji's age 4 years ago in the ratio 15:9.
That is, 13X + 4 / 11X - 4 = 15/9
9(13X + 4) = 15(11X - 4)
117X + 36 = 165X - 60
48X = 96
X = 2.
Now, required ratio is 13X-4 / 11X+4 = 13(2)-4 / 11(2)+4 = 22/26 = 11/13.
Hence the answer is 11:13

Let the ages of X and Y, 7 years ago be 5a/11 years and a years respectively.
Then, (5a/11 + 7)/(a+7) = 11/20
20(5a/11 + 7) = 11(a+7)
100a/11 + 140 = 11a + 77
21a = 693
a = 33
Therefore, the difference between their present ages = (a+7) - (5a/11 + 7) = 40 - 22 = 18.
31. If 25 is the sum of ages of X, Y and Z and if X is 17 years younger than Z who is thrice as old as Y. Then how old

Hence the answer is 27 years.
37. The difference of the ages of Ragu and Vimal is 21 years and the product of their age is 72 years. Find the ratio
of the ages of Ragu and Vimal.
Answer:
Let a be the age of Ragu and b be the age of Vimal.
According to the question,
a - b = 21 ...(1) and ab = 72 ==> b = 72/a
Then (1) becomes, a - 72/a = 21
a2 - 72 = 21a
a2 - 21a - 72 = 0
a2 - 24a + 3a -72 = 0
a(a-24) + 3(a-24) = 0
(a-24)(a+3) = 0
a = 24 or a = -3
Since age cannot be a negative number, the age of Ragu will be 24 years.
Therefore b = 3.
Hence the age of Vimal is 3 years
Then the required ratio = Ragu / Vimal = 24/3 = 8/1
Hence the answer is 8:1
38. Five years ago, Karthick's age was twice that of his daughter's age and the present age of Karthick and his
daughter is in the ratio of 11:6 respectively. What is Karthick's age ?
Answer:
Let K be karthick's age and D be his daughter's age.
Five years ago, K-5 = 2(D-5)
K - 2D = -5 ....(1)
and their ages are in the ratio 11:6. i.e., K/D = 11 / 6
6K = 11D ==> K = 11D/6 ....(2)
Sub. K = 11D / 6 in (2)
(11D/6) - 2D = -5
11D - 12D = -30
-D = -30 ==> D=30
Thus, the age of her daughter is 30 years.
Now, K = 11 x 30/6 = 55 years
Hence the age of Karthick is 55 years.

42. Rajan's present age is three times his daughter's and nine-thirteenth of his mother's present age. The sum of
the present ages of all three of them is 125 years. What is the difference between the present ages of Rajan's
daughter and Rajan's mather?
Answer:
Let Rajan's present age be 'x' years.
=> Then his daughter's present age is = x/3 years.
His mother's present age = 13x/9 years
Now, according to the question,
x + x/3 + 13x/9 = 125
=> x = 125x9/25 = 45
Therefore, required difference = 13x/9 - x/3 = 13x - 3x/9 = 10x/9
=> 10 x 45/9 = 50 years.
43. Rajitha's present age is three years less than twice her age 12 years ago. Also, the ratio of Raj's present age to

average of another 25 boys in the class is 14. What is the average age of the remaining boys in the class ?
Answer:
Total ages of 80 boys = 15 x 80 = 1200 yrs.
Total age of 16 boys = 15 x 16 = 240 yrs
Total age of 25 boys = 14 x 25 = 350 yrs.
Average age of remaining boys = 1200 - (240+350) / 80 - (25+15) = 610/41 = 15.25 yrs.
46. 5 years ago Sushma was 5 times as old as her Son. 5 years hence her age will be 8 less than three times the
corresponding age of her Son. Find their ages?
Answer:
Let the age of sushma be x and
the age of her son is y
Then five years before x-5=5(y-5) ...(1)
Five years hence x+5 = 3(y+5)-8 .....(2)
By soving (1) & (2), we get
5y - 15 = 3y + 7
y = 11 => x = 35
Therefore, the age of Sushma = 35 and her son = 11.
47. The average of the ages of Sushanth, Krish and Rishi is 43 years and the average of the ages of Sushanth, Rishi
and Rohit is 49 years. If Rohit is 54 years old, what is Krish's age ?
Answer:
Let present ages of Sushanth = w, Krish = x, Rishi = y and Rohit = z , then
w + x + y = 43 x 3 = 129 ---(i) and
w + y + z = 49 x 3 = 147 ---(ii)
Subtracting (i) from (ii), (w+y+z) - (w+x+y) = 147 - 129 , z - x = 18 ---(iii)
Given Rohit's age=z=54, so from (iii), x = 54 - 18 = 36.
Therefore, Krish age is 36 years.

latha is 12 years older than Anushka. Then, the respective age of Anushka, Kajal and Charu latha is?
Answer:
Let Anushka age = X
Charu latha 12 yrs older than Anushka so Charu latha age = x+12
Kajal is thrice as old as Anushka so Kajal age = 3x
The ages of Anushka, Kajal and Charu latha together are 57 years
i.e x + (x+12) + 3x = 57 => 5x = 45 => x = 9
Anushka age = 9
Kajal age = 3x = 27
Charu latha age = x+12 = 21

Let Sony's mother's age be 'x'.

Now the conditions given for both of their ages related to their mom is
1/5(x-15) + 3/5(x-10) = 31 => x-15 + 3x-30 = 155 => 4x-45 = 155 => 4x = 200 => x = 50
So, Mother's age = 50.
Cross verification : 15 years ago age = 35 => Sony age = 7
10 years ago age = 40 => bro age = 24
Sum = 24 + 7 = 31.

than his sister. If Raj Tarun's brother is 6 years older than Raj Tarun and his mother is 3 years younger than his
father, how old was Raj Tarun's sister when Raj Tarun was born ?
Answer:
Raj Tarun's age = 0 when he was born.
Then, given his brother is 6 years old.
Then his father is 6 + 32 = 38 when Raj Tarun was born
And his mother is 3 years yonger than his father => so his mother was 35 years old when Raj Tarun was born
and his sister is 25 year younger than his mother
so Raj Tarun's sister was 10 years old when Raj Tarun was born.

When Kaira was born:
Mother was 30.
She is 4 years younger to her brother, so brother was 4 years old.
Sister was 4 years old when brother was born, so sister is 4 years elder to brother, so
sister was 8 years old.
Father was 30 when sister was born, so father is 30 years elder to sister, so father was
30+8 = 38 years old.
Now when Kaira was born, mother was 30 and father was 38
So difference in their ages is 8 years. So when mother was born, father was 8.

same. So increased by 2 years each. So 50 +2 + 2 = 54
Now when 2nd child born, total age of 4 = 15*4 = 60
So this time second child‘s age = 0 and age of father, mother and first child would have
increased by same. So increased by 2 each such that 54 + 2+2+2 = 60
So now this time (after 4 years from age 50), total age of couple is 50+4+4 = 58
So average = 29 years

Option B
Solution:
B/A = 2/3 and A/C = 1/2
So B : A : C = 2*1 : 3*1 : 3*2 = 2 : 3 : 6
So 6x – 2x = 24, 4x = 24, x = 6
So total of their present ages = (2+3+6)*6. So average = (2+3+6)*6 / 3 = 22 years

Option D
Solution:
Y + K + P = 42
(Y – 1) : (K + 1) : (P + 3) = 5 : 6 : 4
So (5x + 1) + (6x – 1) + (4x – 3) = 42
Solve, x = 3
So Yogita‘s age 1 ago hence = 5x = 15, so present age = 16
Prachi‘s age 3 years hence = 4x = 12, so present age = 9
So (Y+2)/P = 18/9 = 2/1

5. Sneha‘s mother‘s age is five years more than twice the age of Sneha. When Sneha
was born, her brother Rahul was four years old and her father two years older than her
mother. If the average age of her mother and father is 46 years. Find the ratio of age of
Rahul to that of Sneha.
A) 3 : 7
B) 7 : 4
C) 6 : 5
D) 8 : 11
E) 3 : 10

View Answer

Option C
Solution:
Let age of Sneha = x, So age of Mother = 2x+5, Rahul = x+4, Father = 2x+7
(2x+5 + 2x+7) = 2*46
So x = 20
So (x+4)/x = 24/20 = 6/5

6. Ratio of ages of Reena and Prerna is 2 : 3 and the ratio of ages of Tiya and Reena is 3
: 1. If the ratio of age of Prerna four years hence to age of Tiya three years hence is 5 :

A) 77
B) 65
C) 84
D) 43
E) 79

View Answer

Option A
Solution:
P/R = 3/2 and R/T = 1/3
So P : R : T =
3*1 : 2*1 : 2*3 = 3 : 2 : 6
Now (3x+4)/(6x+3) = 5/9
