32. Soaps and detergents are both, types of salts. State the difference between the two.
Write the mechanism of the cleansing action of soaps. Why do soaps not form lather
(foam) with hard water? Mention any two problems that arise due to the use of
detergents instead of soaps.

(a) On dropping a small piece of sodium in a test tube containing carbon compound 'X'
with molecular formula 𝐶2 𝐻6 𝑂, a brisk effervescence is observed and a gas 'Y' is
produced. On bringing a burning splinter at the mouth of the test tube the gas evolved
burns with a pop sound. Identify "X' and 'Y'. Also write the chemical equation for the
reaction. Write the name and structure of the product formed, when you heat 'X' with
excess cone, sulphuric acid.

37. A scale for measuring hydrogen ion concentration in a solution, called pH scale has
been developed. The p in pH stands for 'potenz' in German, meaning power. On the pH
scale we can measure pH generally from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline). pH should
be thought of simply as a number which indicates the acidic or basic nature of a
solution. Higher the hydronium ion concentration, lower is the pH value.
