Example 5 Air side system part II

This document outlines the procedures for building an air side system in Revit MEP, focusing on manual duct routing. Key steps include changing project units to metric, loading HVAC equipment families, placing air terminals and VAV boxes, and performing duct routing and sizing. It also covers system inspection, duct pressure-loss reporting, and applying insulation and lining to ductwork.

Revit MEP

Example 5 – Building up Air side system part II – Manual duct routing

(Based on chapter 9 Exercise File of the “Mastering Autodesk Revit MEP”
http://as.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1118604199.html)

Procedures for building up an Air side system on a developed building model

1. Open the file “Chapter9_Dataset.rvt”
2. Change the some key units of the project to metric
- Manage  Project Units
- Change length (Common category) and flowrate, friction and velocity (HVAC
category) to metric
3. Open the ceiling plan view and 3D view for better handling
(* Add system browser for better handling (F9))
4. Load specific air diffusers and A/C equipment
- Load related HVAC equipment families (diffuser and VAV box)
- Insert  Load Family  browse and download the equipment families
(“Diffuser - Perforated - Round Neck - Ceiling Mounted.rfa” and
“VAV_SingleDuct_4-16inch_break object styles.rfa”)
5. Place air terminals
- System  Air Terminal  Select air terminals (Supply diffuser – Perforated –
Round Neck)  Use ceiling plan view to place diffuser
(* set “place on face” or set offset (height) same as false ceiling level)
(* change insertion point of family: Double click the object to edit the insertion
point of the family. Open Ref. level of Floor Plans of the family, then select
relevant hidden line  tick the checkbox of “Defines Origin” in Property palette)
- Set the property “Flow” of each diffuser to 125 l/s
6. Place VAV box
- System  Mechanical Equipment  Select VAV box (VAV-SingleDuct 4-16inch
12)  Use ceiling plan view to place equipment
(*create a section view and check the false ceiling height)
(*set offset (height) higher than false ceiling level, around 3000mm)
6. Try automatic duct routing as the previous example (Automatic duct routing may
not have suitable solution to suit particular situation)
7. Manual duct routing
- Choose type of duct from ribbon (System  Duct / Flex Duc)
- Set properties (e.g. offset and dimension)
- Draw path of ducts and make connections (* use ceiling plan view for
better handling)
- Analyse  check system (show disconnects options)
- User duct editing commands as appropriate
- Duct System  “Cap Open Ends”
- Duct System  Change type (e.g. rectangular to round duct)
- (* Extend the tee of air duct by click the cap open ends button)
8. Duct sizing (same as Example 4)
- Use “Tab” and left-click to select the whole duct system (Tab to cycle and
highlight all duct components then left click to select)
- Modify / Duct  Duct/pipe sizing
- Select sizing method (e.g. equal friction, static regain, etc.)
- Set constraints of branch duct (e.g. “calculate size only”, “match connector
size”, etc.)
- Set constraints of duct height and width
(*If warning message “no loss defined” occurs, select all error fittings and
change the property “Loss Method” to “ Not Defined”)
9. System Inspection and Duct pressure-loss report (same as Example 4)
- Select the whole system and click system inspection in the ribbon
(* Flow and pressure information will be shown on each section)
(* Critical path will be highlighted in red)
- Analyse  Duct pressure loss report
 Select relevant field to generate report (HTML or CSV forma)
10. Insulation and lining (same as Example 4)
- Select duct and apply insulation (external) of lining (internal) for ductwork
- Select suitable thickness
