Suppose you want to
find the distance of
Earth from the Sun or
the Moon. We will have
an easier time doing
this if we measure
angles instead of
distances.
2
The idea is to find the relationships between angles and
distances, and the trigonometric functions provide us with the
tools we need.
3
How do we solve equations
involving trigonometric functions?

Navigation is a process of
accurately determining
one’s position and
planning a route for the
movement of a craft or
vehicle from one place to
another.
25
Trigonometry is fundamental to navigation because it is used
extensively in calculations referring to Cartesian coordinates.

Solving Equations with Two or More Trigonometric Terms
Factoring is a useful technique for solving equations, including trigonometric equations. If the equation is in quadratic
form, we may use factoring, completing the square, or the quadratic formula. The idea of this technique is to move all
terms to one side of the equation, factor, and then use the Zero-Factor Law.

Solving Equations with Two or More Trigonometric Terms
If an equation contains more than one trigonometric function, try to express the equation in terms of one trigonometric
function. Trigonometric identities, along with algebraic manipulation and other techniques, are useful in simplifying
complicated equations.
