Lesson Plan: Types of Wiring Devices

Subject: Electrical Engineering / Electrical Technology

Grade Level: High School or Technical College

Duration: 1 Hour
Objective:

 Students will identify and understand various types of wiring devices.

 Students will learn the functions of different wiring devices and their application in
electrical systems.
 Students will demonstrate the ability to classify wiring devices and describe their key
features.

Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard and markers

 Projector (if using digital slides)
 Samples of wiring devices (e.g., switches, outlets, junction boxes, etc.)
 Handouts with diagrams and descriptions of wiring devices
 Multimeter (for demonstrations)

Lesson Outline:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

 Begin by asking students, “What are wiring devices and why are they important in
electrical systems?”
 Brief discussion on how wiring devices play a crucial role in controlling electrical
circuits, distributing power, and ensuring safety.
 Briefly introduce the key types of wiring devices: switches, outlets, junction boxes,
circuit breakers, and others.

2. Direct Instruction (25 minutes)

 Presentation on Different Types of Wiring Devices

Use slides or diagrams to explain the following types of wiring devices:
1. Switches
 Purpose: Controls the flow of electricity in a circuit.
 Types: Single-pole, double-pole, three-way, four-way, dimmer switches.
 Demonstration: Show how a single-pole switch works.
2. Outlets (Receptacles)
 Purpose: Provide a point for electrical devices to connect to the power
supply.
 Types: Standard outlets, GFCI outlets, and AFCI outlets.
 Demonstration: Show different types of outlets and explain their
applications.
3. Junction Boxes
 Purpose: Enclose wire connections and protect from physical damage or
short circuits.
 Types: Metal, plastic, and weatherproof junction boxes.
 Explanation: Emphasize the importance of proper installation for safety.
4. Circuit Breakers
 Purpose: Protect circuits from overloads or short circuits by automatically
switching off the power when the current exceeds safe limits.
 Types: Standard, GFCI breakers, and AFCI breakers.
 Explanation: Demonstrate how a breaker trips.
5. Connectors
 Purpose: Join two or more wires in a safe, secure, and insulated manner.
 Types: Wire nuts, terminal blocks, and butt connectors.
 Explanation: Discuss their usage in connecting different wires securely.

3. Classroom Activity (15 minutes)

 Hands-on Exploration
Divide students into small groups. Provide each group with a set of wiring devices
(switches, outlets, junction boxes, connectors, etc.). Ask each group to identify the
device, explain its function, and discuss a scenario where they would use it.

Encourage students to ask questions and discuss how safety and proper installation of
each device impacts an electrical system.

4. Review & Recap (5 minutes)

 Ask students to summarize the types of wiring devices discussed and their primary
functions.
 Review key points using a quick Q&A.
Example Questions:
o “What type of wiring device is used to protect against electrical overloads?”
(Answer: Circuit Breaker)
o “What is the purpose of a GFCI outlet?” (Answer: To protect against electrical
shocks in wet environments)
5. Conclusion (5 minutes)

 Reinforce the importance of selecting the right wiring device for specific electrical
systems to ensure safety and proper functionality.
 Assign a homework activity where students label the different types of wiring devices in
a circuit diagram or real-life example.
 End with a preview of the next lesson on electrical safety and installation.

Assessment:

 Participation in class activity and discussion.

 Homework assignment to label and explain wiring devices in a given diagram.

Additional Notes:

 Be sure to emphasize safety when handling wiring devices and electrical components.
 Encourage students to explore further by researching wiring devices in real-world
applications (homes, factories, commercial buildings).

This lesson plan introduces students to the core wiring devices and prepares them for practical
applications in electrical work.
