Introductory Message
Welcome to Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Negros Occidental and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Activity Sheet is developed to

help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule

DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION ACTIVITY SHEET No. 4

Geological Maps

I. Learning Competency with Code

Interpret geological maps (DRR11/12-IIa-b-30).

II. Background Information for Learners

In the Philippines, geohazard map is recognized as an important tool in

preventing disasters by the local government units and supported by the
national government agencies. A hazard map is a map that highlight areas that
are affected by or are vulnerable to a particular hazard. They are typically
created for natural hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides,
flooding and tsunami. A geohazard map indicates areas that are susceptible to
floods and landslides, as determined by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau
(MGB).

Interpreting geohazard maps is essential in interpreting and solving

certain geologic problems in the country. It helps prevent serious damage and
deaths.

This learning activity will guide you to identify the different parts of
geohazard map and develop appreciation on the importance of geohazard
mapping in the implementation of the disaster mitigation plans and programs.
It will make you aware of the vulnerabilities of the community where you live in.

III. Activity Proper
Activity 1
Geological Maps
1. Study the map and locate the following parts:

Title:
“Landslide and Flood Susceptible Map of Quezon City Quadrangle”

Legend:

Coordinates: Orientation Compass:

Map Ruler/ Bar Scale:

2
Guide Questions:
Using the same hazard map below, answer the following questions:

1. What are the different colors used to distinguish different areas in the
map?
2. What does each color mean regarding the susceptibility of an area for a
specific hazard?
3. For each hazard and level of susceptibility, what actions should
someone in a particular area take during period of intense rain?
4. Where are the areas of high susceptibility to landslides? What can you
conclude regarding the topography of such areas?
5. Where are the areas of moderate susceptibility to landslides?
6. Where are the areas of low susceptibility to landslides?
7. Where are the areas of high susceptibility to flooding? What can you
conclude regarding the topography of such area?
8. Where are the areas of moderate to low susceptibility to flooding?
9. What areas are considered generally safe during period of strong rain?

IV. Reflection:
Is hazard map important? Why or Why not?

Activity 1
1. Red, green, yellow, violet, pink
2. & 3.
For rain-induced landslide prone areas, there are three colors:
Yellow – low susceptibility, less likely to be experience landslide; Be prepared.
Green – moderate susceptible; be cautious.
Red – highly susceptible; be alert and ready to evacuate.
For flood-prone areas:
Pink – low to moderate susceptible. Be cautious
Violet – highly susceptible; be alert and ready to evacuate.
4. Areas in color red. These areas are normally mountainous areas with steep slopes with
little vegetative cover and high levels of human development.
5. Areas in color green
6. Areas in color yellow
7. Areas in color violet. These are normally low lying areas adjacent to rivers and lakes as well
as areas in the valleys
8. Areas in color pink
9. Areas with low susceptibility to both flooding and landslide
