Introductory Message
Welcome to Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Negros Occidental and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults)
in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Activity Sheet will help you
facilitate the leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Activity Sheet is developed to

help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and
answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed
schedule.

DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION ACTIVITY SHEET `No. 5

Mitigation Strategies to Prevent Loss of Lives and Properties

I. Learning Competency with Code

Apply mitigation strategies to prevent loss of lives and properties.
(DRR11/12-IIa-b-31)

II. Background Information for Learners

Geological hazards cannot be eliminated but there are mitigation
strategies be used to reduce its impacts. In places where the risk is naturally
higher, mitigation measure should strengthened to minimize effects.

There are a lot of mitigation actions and initiatives are in place to prevent
or reduce the risk to life, property, social and economic activities. This can be
in a form of awareness, education, preparedness, and prediction and warning
systems which can reduce the disruptive impacts of a natural disaster on
communities. The best way to cope with this is to prepare by having a plan
before it strikes.

III. Activity Proper

Activity 1
Saving the City of Malipayon
Adapted from: https://mystery science.com

In this activity, you are going to come up with a design to help people
deal with landslides.

Suppose you’ve just won a house in a raffle draw.

It’s a charming little house near the beach, but there’s a problem. Your
new house is located in Malipayon City.

A few years ago this landslide tumbled downhill, destroying a dozen

homes. Luckily, it stopped right before it hit your new house. But it was a close
call. You’d like to move to your new house, but you’re worried that there might
be another landslide. How can you protect your house from a landslide? To
solve a problem like that, you’re going to have to think like an engineer.
Engineers are people who solve problems by designing and building things.

The problems you need to solve are:

1. How can you protect your house from a landslide?
2. How can you stop a landslide before it starts?

As you don’t want any rocks to fall ever again. If you can keep that from
happening, you do more than just protect you house. You have saved the city,
too. You would be the hero of Malipayon City.

1
So look at the simple drawing of the town and figure out what started the
landslide in the city.

In the days before the landslide, there was a lot of rain. The house at the
was flooded with water. Considering that the hill itself is covered in loose rocks,
what do you think will happen?

Think of different possibilities and ideas to answer your problem.

Write down your plan and draw a sketch of how you save your house in
Malipayon City.

V. Answer Key

Activity 1
Possible answers: (Few of the ways engineers combat landslides)
• You can change the slope of the hillside with walls and terraces or make barriers
design to catch falling rocks.
• To protect a road or house, you can build a rock shed or design a radically
different house.
