The capacity to read, observe, write, design, speak, and listen in a way that enables
effective communication is known as literacy. Literacy is more than just being able to read and
write; it also refers to one's ability to use these capabilities to connect with, comprehend, and
understand the nuances of the environment in which they live. The meaning of literacy has
evolved over time. From being simply known as "the ability to read and write", literacy is now
viewed as inclusive of other skills needed for one to cope in this fast-paced world.
Welcome to our portfolio. We, the third year Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in
Math and Science, consisting of a total number of 25 students—9 students from Mathematics
major and 16 students from Science major. Our journey ended just as quickly as it began in this
course, ED 110 with Dr. Harold O. Buenvenida. We did not only acquire academic learnings but
also real-life learnings that we can surely use as future educators.
"Plastics sa plastics, lata sa lata, bote sa bote at papel sa papel". This is what our major
insight in this symposium. You don't just throw your garbage in the trashcan. You also segregate
it and put it where that trash belongs. As what the saying said, birds with the same feather flocks
together. It is also applies when segregating waste. Waste with the same used will be placed
together, and wastes that decayed will be placed on decaying wastes.
Through this portfolio, let’s take a look back on the unforgettable memories we’ve built
in this course ED 110- Building and Enhancing New Literacies across the Curriculum. This
portfolio is an organized collection that celebrates the diverse range of literacies we have
developed and embraced throughout our personal and academic journey. In a world filled with
information and constant communication, literacy takes on new dimensions beyond traditional
reading and writing skills. This serves as a testament to our growth and adaptability in various
literacies that have shaped our understanding of the world around us.
The world is our home; environment is our habitat and source of everything from food,
water, clothes, electricity among others. Us, human, being the highest form of species among all
that has the ability to learn, understand, process, morale and has the ability to take actions, we
are responsible to our home. These past few months, heat has worsened and storms became
frequent and stronger. Observing our surrounding, climate is returning our deeds, plants and
animals are suffering. We must take account to this catastrophe using our literacy; it’s time to
enhance environmental literacy and put it into action to save our home.
The goal of our portfolio is to showcase our diverse range of skills, experiences,
accomplishment, and new goals that are set in aiming our main objective and that is to support
environmental sustainability, ultimately demonstrating our expertise and potential to expected
readers. This is also to showcase all the things that we've learned, the skills that we've developed,
and our experiences in this course during the 2nd semester of this school year.
When this course was introduced, we have already expected that we would learn a lot of skills
and knowledge on how to become literate when it comes to technology. And this course met my
expectations of learning a lot about the concepts and definitions of what we called "literacy". I
learn how to become literate not only in technology but also in the environment and finances.
I have learned in this course about the features of literacy as well as the concepts and the
definitions.
Also, I learned the essential knowledge and skills that I will used to become literate.
NARRATIVE REPORT
When we broaden our horizons and look around, we can see many things that include waste.
Waste has become so rampant in every part of the world that no man can stop it alone. As a
member of the environment, I noticed that some parts of our neighbourhood and school are filthy
due to trash on the sidewalks such as candy wrappers and other trash. We are dealing with
environmental issues such as global warming, flash floods, and so on, and people's poor waste
management practices are exacerbating the problem. Some people are careless with their
garbage. They do not consider the potential environmental and health consequences of their
actions. Waste disposal is any method of getting rid of unwanted substances or materials. Poor
waste management activities cause serious environmental issues on a site. According to the solid
waste management symposium, proper waste disposal is very important because we can see if
the community is clean and proper or not. They also stated that it is very critical because certain
types of waste may pollute humans and bodies of land, water, and air. Utilizing waste disposal
issues is based on how people handle their trash. They claim that if we start being disciplined
about putting our trash in the proper place, we can solve the waste problem. Discipline is the
number one solution to the waste problem.
Last, June 6, 2023, BSED Math & Science 3 conducted an environmental literacy symposium
about solid waste management with the theme "Bridging the Gap in Solid Waste Management: A
Leadership Strategy for a Sustainable Environment. This environmental literacy symposium was
held at Capsu Gymnasium and was attended by the newly elected SSC officers. The program
started with the prayer to be led by Jea Rose Alba of BSED Science 3, followed by the
Philippine National Anthem and Capiz hymn. After that, Rocel Ann Valbarez of BSED Math 3,
delivered her open remarks, followed by the introduction of the speaker to be led by Perlie Ann
Esmeralda of BSED Science 3. The resource speaker was Dr. Jereline De Pablo, a science
professor who prepared a PowerPoint presentation regarding different kinds of waste and how to
manage them that can be found in our surroundings. One of the important things that were
highlighted in her presentation is that “the more you eat, the sooner you die.” After the
discussion, the workshop plan was introduced to the officers, who were grouped into four. Each
group was given one hour to work on their task and ten minutes to present their work. After that,
the judges scored the work of each group, and then they were given awards and certificates. We
declared three winners ranging from first, second and third. The fourth group to present won the
first place in this competition with their project plan entitled, “Plastic mo, Pungkuan ko,” which
they aimed to mitigate and alleviate plastic waste within the university, to encourage students to
be an advocate for environmental consciousness, to provide the lack of chairs, and to raise fund
for the school.
It was a challenging and fun experience for us, we work under pressure together as one,
hand by hand to make this environmental advocacy successful. We united together by coming up
the plan, integrating ideas, and making the plan happened. There were some conflict like lacking
of some materials and financial but still we made it possible by the help and cooperation of the
team. The invited SSC officers really came to show their interest and sense of leadership towards
the application of their environmental literacy, they showcase and explain their plans on how
they will take effect the solid waste management action plan within the campus. The votes they
got were truly worth it that they were willing to extend their service and take actions for the
betterment of the environment and, most especially, to utilize and practice their literacy through
leading their crafted environmental advocacy plan.
REFLECTION
Individually we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean. When we talk about waste, we are
putting ourselves in a situation where humans must intervene, because nature does not generate
waste. We can't escape the fact that humans have become irresponsible with our waste. We are
aware of the consequences of our actions, but we lose sight of them and throw our trash
everywhere. We see various types of waste everywhere we go, and this waste can cause every
living thing to suffer as we move forward. Improper waste disposal, particularly by municipal
waste, causes a problem. Wastes are no longer under control, as thousands and millions of
different wastes are improperly disposed of every day. For quite some time now, human waste
has been detrimental to our environment. Humans produce far too much garbage and are
incapable of dealing with it in a sustainable manner. Non-biodegradable waste that cannot be
properly recycled is filling our oceans and landfills. Improper waste disposal on any scale can
lead to environmental, health, and economic concerns. And now, before things get worse, we
need to work together to reduce waste production. Be a social influencer who contributes to the
improvement of our environment. Today, you can take a small step toward saving the planet.
Before you can affect change in your environment, you must first change yourself.
Environmental literacy, in my mind, is closely related to being prepared for the world. These
skills extend beyond understanding the basics of the life systems of our planet; environmental
literacy prepares students to bridge the gap between understanding issues and taking actions to
solve and improve problems. This environmental literacy symposium increased and enhanced
my knowledge about the concepts of being environmentally literate. This environmental literacy
symposium will help me acquire and develop some essential skills and understanding about the
importance of being environmentally literate.
In this time where we experience too much heat, heavy rains and frequent storms is a sign that
our environment needs help even in our own little ways. We are all literate about our
environment but our literacy is not being practiced, we’re being ignorant about our surrounding
and now we are suffering. Through this symposium, we witness the undeniable leadership skills
of the newly elected SSC officers, their passion, and cooperation, their drive to address the
environmental issue inside the campus to ease and practice our literacy in environment that need
to be use and implemented. Their initiation to their crafted action plan shows that they are
interested and willing to extend their hands and give their service to us especially for the
wellness of our surrounding. After the symposium, we learn so many things like, the importance
of proper garbage disposal, the negative effects of environmental unfamiliarity and the little
things we do that impacts our nature. Awareness plus action acted upon it will succor the
problem we face in our environment to ease it, change really start within or with one self to
which you will radiate and influence everyone around you and as a leader, it must start with you
and else will follow.
ESSAY
The issue of effective solid waste management is very important nowadays, and its resolution is
required not only for the safety of the human environment, but also for human health. At the
same time, it is important to note that this issue is frequently overlooked, and solid waste is
frequently disposed of incorrectly. Furthermore, this issue is regarded as less serious than the
issue of proper waste disposal of other types of waste, such as radioactive waste. However, the
danger and potential threat posed by solid waste is frequently underestimated. Solid waste
management should become an integral part of our lives because it plays an important role in
environmental protection and health maintenance. Every day, the population grows, and waste is
produced indefinitely. We either dump all of the waste in a place where there is no proper
disposal method, or we burn it away, releasing harmful pollutants into the air. All waste from
homes, industries, and factories must be properly managed; otherwise, it may cause a variety of
environmental and health problems. This is why we require efficient methods of collecting,
sorting, transporting, and disposing of waste. Every individual should be aware of the importance
of solid waste management. It is everyone's responsibility to properly manage the solid waste
generated in their homes, offices, or other establishments. Solid waste management contributes
to the conservation of our natural resources. It also aids in the reduction of methane gas
production in landfills. Methane is one of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global
warming. As a result, proper solid waste management will assist us in preserving our
environment and avoiding the harmful effects of global warming. It is critical to improve solid
waste management in order for citizens to live healthy lives. It is every citizen's responsibility to
maintain initiative. Proper garbage segregation at the source is critical because it facilitates waste
management, recycling, and disposal in an environmentally friendly manner.
Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum is a very interesting course that
introduces the concepts of new literacies in the 21st century as an evolving social phenomenon
and shared cultural practices across learning areas. One of the concepts of this course is to
become environmentally literate. That's why one of our outputs in this course is to conduct an
environmental literacy symposium that talks about solid waste management. This symposium
would help, especially the newly elected SSC officers of Capsu Pontevedra, to enhance their
knowledge and understanding as well as to develop and acquire skills about proper waste
management.
Environment is calling for a help, and we must answer and take actions. The BSED Science and
Math 3 are advocating solid waste management by calling the succor of the newly elected SSC
officers to lead the advocacy for sustainable environment. Through this symposium proposing
environmental consciousness and solid waste management throughout the CAPSU Pontevedra
Campus to the SSC officers led in creating action plans to aid the environmental problem inside
the campus which is the proper disposal of solid waste that contributes to the environmental
problem such like the blocking of the drainages due to solid waste. We believe that everyone is
environmental literate but our literacy are not practiced, we know that cutting down trees causes
increases the thinning of the ozone layer resulting to extreme heat, we know that improper waste
disposal can cause soil, water and air pollution, we know all of these effects but we chose to be
ignorant to the wellbeing of our environment and now we are facing the consequences. Being
literate is useless unless action is acted upon it. We gather the newly elected leaders to come up
an action plan to address the environmental issue inside the campus, it aims to raise awareness
and practice environmental literacy by proper garbage disposal and collecting the solid waste to
be led by SSC officers that will further ease the environmental problem here in our campus and
at the same time practice their literacy and raise consciousness to our surroundings.
The natural environment sustains the life of all beings universally. Sustainable development is
the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.” - Gro Harlem Brundtland. Look deep into nature and then
you will understand everything better, to walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles. The
Earth laughs in flowers and Nature is the art of God.
Literacy is one of those terms that at first seems straightforward, but as pointed out by Keefe and
Copeland (2011), asking people to define literacy "deceptively suggests simplicity but instead
opens up a world of complexity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO, 2009–2014) has discussed literacy not just in reference to teaching
practices in schools but in reference to the meaning of literacy across the world. Two key
components of their description are that literacy is a "fundamental human right" and the
"foundation for lifelong learning."
