Laboratory-Exercise-in-Principles-of-Crop-Production-Ist-exercises-2022-2023

The document outlines a laboratory exercise focused on the identification and classification of crop fields, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and categorizing various field crops. Students are expected to identify at least 50 vegetable field crops, classify 10 field crops botanically, and understand the agronomic classification system. The exercise includes a field tour for practical identification and classification of crops, along with memorization of scientific names and family classifications.

Exercise No.1

Identification and Classification of Crop Fields

I. Introduction
If one would grow a field crop, he must be able to identify the crop. Classification
reduces the big group of field crops to smaller groups and allows conveniences in identifying
them and relating them to one another.
There are many ways to classify field crops, and any systems depends on how the
classification is to be used. Field crops may be classified on the basis of natural relationships
such as similarity of parts. This system, called botanical classification, is the most precise and
most universally used of the different classification methods.
From the agronomic standpoint, field crops maybe classified on the basis on the
agronomic used, although some field crops have different uses. Field crops are classified as grain
or cereals, fibers, pulses (legume for seed), forage, root, tuber, oil, drug and alcohol crops.
Special purpose classification of field crops include cover, catch, soiling, silage, green
manure in trap crops.
Other classification systems are those that are based on growth duration, structure and
from climatic adaptation, water management, and others.

II. Objectives
At the end of the exercise, the students will be able to:
1. Identify at least 50 of the more important vegetable field crops;
2. Classify botanically at 10 field crops, 5 for vegetable crops, and 5 for horticultural
crops;
3. State the common Name, Scientific Name and Family Name of at least 50 field
crops;
4. Group field crops according to the agronomic classification system

III. Procedure
A. The instructor will be bring the class to a field tour of the campus to identify field
crops. Emphasis will be given the physical appearance of crops, growth habit in
growing conditions. The economic uses of each crop will be discussed.
Crops that are not in season will be studied using live and herbarium specimens in
the room those that are not available locally may be studied with the aid of
reference reading materials.

B. Botanical Classification of Crops

1. Using the pattern below, make a botanical classification of 10 field crops both
agronomic and horticultural crops that your instructor that will assign to you.
