FUNCTION
MEETING 2
At the end of the lesson, the students should be
able to:
1. Understand, illustrate and describe the
following components of the graph of quadratic
function:
● direction of the opening;

● vertex;

● axis of symmetry;

● maximum or minimum value; and

● x and y-intercepts

2. Graph the quadratic function.

LET’S RECALL!
What is an intercept?
The point where the line
crosses the 𝑦 or 𝑥-axis.
LET’S RECALL!
How do we find the x and
y-intercept?
• To find the x-intercept, set y
equal to zero and solve for x.

• To find the y-intercept, set x

equal to zero and solve for y.

x-intercepts of a Parabola
To find the x-intercepts (if there are any) of a quadratic
function, solve the equation ax2 + bx + c = 0 for x.
This equation may be solved by factoring, by using the quadratic formula, or
by completing the square.

𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟑
To find the x-intercepts, set y = 0. Thus, the x-intercepts are
𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 3 = 0 −𝟑, 𝟎 and 𝟏, 𝟎 . These
values could also be found
𝑥+3 𝑥−1 =0 by the quadratic formula (or
𝑥+3=0 𝑥−1=0 by completing the square).
𝑥 = −3 𝑥=1
y-intercept of a Parabola

The intersection of the parabola and the 𝑦 −axis.

The 𝑦 − intercept of a quadratic function can be found

when 𝑥 = 0.
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟑
To find the y-intercepts, set x = 0.
