CHAPTER 1
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
MORINGA OLEIFERA
Roots in Ayurveda:
The use of this miraculous superfood dates back in history. This plant
has been in use for over 2000 years and there is a mention in the ancient
Indian Ayurvedic texts dating 150 BC. The ancient text talked about the
tree's astonishing ability to treat over 300 medical conditions, including
asthma, tuberculosis, kidney stones, and heart diseases. Fast forward to
recent times, this amazing ability is now clinically proven. A detailed
study by John Hopkins University found that Moringa indeed can
mitigate over 300 disease conditions. For more details, read through the
study in Chapter 2 (two).
In Jamaica, they have used the oil from this herb for centuries to
create tasty culinary salads.

Limitations to This Study:
At the time of this study, by his own admission, Dr. Fahey accepted that
Moringa research is still at its infancy and much more needs to be known
about this wonder plant. So, there was a need for more scientific
evidence-based conclusions on the plant's effectiveness.
Today, there are volumes of research data available on Moringa
oleifera and it's still ongoing. These range from clinical studies, animal
studies to alternative medical experiments. However, it's inadequate so
far as human benefits go and it awaits much more research.
CHAPTER 3
NUTRITIONAL OVERVIEW
- MORINGA OLEIFERA
Carbohydrates
The Moringa plant is very rich in carbohydrates. 100 grams of leaves
contain more than 8.28% carbohydrate while 100grams of pods pack
8.53% of Carbs. Carbohydrate is the main provider of energy to the body
by converting food into glucose.
Dietary Fiber
If you are somebody suffering from a digestive problem, then look no
further. Moringa acts as a dietary fiber that enables ingested food to
move smoothly through the gut before being absorbed. Dietary fiber
also prevents constipation and bloating. A lack of dietary fiber leads to
stomach cramps and pain while having bowel movements. Every 100
grams of Moringa pods and 100 grams of Moringa leaves contain 3.2%
and 2% dietary fiber respectively.
Alkaline Nature
Our body is constantly trying to maintain a state of balance
(Homeostasis). For this, it tries to always regulate the acid-alkaline
balance in the body. The pH scale (low means acidic while high means
alkaline) can measure this acid-alkaline nature of our body. Since Moringa
is rich in minerals, it is by nature highly alkaline. Our body fluids are also
slightly alkaline whereas the Toxins are acidic. Moringa helps to maintain
this balance in the face of excess toxicity from outside and thus keeping
our body disease-free.
Proteins
Proteins are the building blocks of the body and Moringa has a high
concentration of it in its leaves. The average daily protein requirement of
a human being is around 17.5%, the Moringa leaves can very well meet
these needs since 100 grams of Moringa leaves contain up to 9.8%
protein which is astonishing. To get a high quality of amino acid, which is
the basic unit of a protein, the Moringa leaves are crushed into powdered
form and consumed.
Oleic Acid
This is a monounsaturated fat with many health benefits. The seeds
and fresh pods of Moringa contain this acid. This is the reason they grow
Moringa in many drought-prone regions of Asia and Africa as an oilseed
crop to improve the nutritional levels.
Vitamin A
Moringa has a very special relationship with this vitamin which
enhances vision, improves skin, boosts immunity and repairs the mucous

7564 IU of vitamin A which is 252% of the daily average intake by an

Vitamin B-complex vitamins
These vitamins act as co-enzymes in fat, protein and carbohydrate
metabolism. Moringa contains a good amount of vitamin B-complex
vitamins, namely: Thiamine (vitamin B1), Folate (vitamins B9), Pantothenic
Acid (vitamin B5), Niacin (vitamin B3), Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and
Riboflavin.
Minerals
Minerals confer a world of benefits to the human body. Moringa is a
rich source of the finest minerals such as Zinc, Iron, Selenium,
Phosphorus, Sodium, Magnesium, Copper and Calcium. Zinc greatly
