Chapter 15: Preparing Job-Application Material Planning the Job Search

Preparing job application materials takes weeks and months. Do a self inventory -What are your strengths/weaknesses? -What subjects do you like? -What kind of organization are you interested in? -What are your geographical preferences?

Appearance of a Resume
One inch Margins on all sides Use clear type Make sure your page has a balanced appearance Clear organization -use adequate white space -indent the 2nd and subsequent lines of any item a few spaces (see TC 396 and 398 for an example)

Content of a Resume
Provide clear, specific info without generalizations or selfcongratulation. Must be completely free of errors. 1 page resume = less than 10 years experience. 2 page resume = more than 10 yrs experience or more advanced position.

Chronological Resume
Contact information - name, address (local and permanent), telephone, e-mail Objective - make it applicable to the job - be specific Education - the degree (B.A. in English, minor in Spanish) -name of university/location - expected graduation date Relevant coursework - do not include high school unless experience is relevant to the job See samples on pages 408 and 410 of TC Employment Experience - list in backwards chronological order Other - Computer skills (if applicable for the job) - Honors/activities - Languages - References *include only if you have room

Employment Experience
Consider grouping non professional positions 402-404 Tie experience to the job youre applying for If you contributed to your tuition or expenses (50%+), state so on your resume. If you have gaps in employment history explain in your job letter.

Skills Resume
Same as chronological except - contains skills and abilities section at top - work experience will not include job descriptions -See sample on page pg 411 of TC

Electronic Resume
Not exactly the same as print resume - focus on nouns rather than verbs Add keywords - make keywords relevant to the position - think about what keywords you would search for if you were hiring for this position One column of text aligned on the left Use a sans serif font (such as Arial) See sample on page 416 of TC

Elaborating on Your Education

List your GPA (3.0 or above) -list your average in the courses in your major if it is more impressive Create a list of courses relevant to the job you are applying for -provide course title: Literature of the Gilded Age rather than Engl 489 Describe any special projects you have worked on List honor and awards you have received

Selectivity and Development -Select 2 or 3 points of special interest to the employer Introductory Paragraph - how you found out about the job - name the open position - why you are applying for the job - forecast what the rest of the letter will contain Education Paragraph - should be first if your education is stronger - use details Employment Paragraph - should be first if your employment background is stronger - use details - focus on one aspect Concluding Paragraph - Reference to your resume - request an interview - include both phone number and e-mail address - also include best time to reach you

4 Most of all, focus on how you can help the company rather than on how the company can help you.
