ECONOMICS

I am Karabi Das pursuing my master’s in economics, during these years of studying economics I
gradually developed interest in the subject, so I want to study the subject and gather more
knowledge by enrolling in the PhD program in your institute. I enjoy learning new the concepts,
different ways to solve economic problems using mathematics, how change in one economic
variable (EV) affects another EV from both micro and macro perspectives. I want to pursue a
career in economic research and teaching. By gathering more knowledge and skills through
PhD, I want to help the next generation to learn more effectively and easily so that they can
grow and do well in their respective fields, which is good for the well-being of the society. In
upcoming years, I want to see myself as an expert in the domain of economics.
I am consistently trying to perform well in my academics, I have topped in both 10th and 12th in
school level. After completing 10th (Dharanidhar Vidyapith High School), with the guidance of
teachers and family members, I took economics in 12th (P B Dhirdutta HS school) and started
taking interest in the subject. Finally took economics as a major subject in my BA (Nalbari college
under Gauhati university). With the help of teachers, I developed Strong understanding of the
subject which prepared me for higher studies, I got 3rd rank in my university. Then I enrolled for
MA in economics at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State open university where I developed
comprehensive understanding in various domains of economics like financial system,
Econometrics, Research Methodology and while doing my MA, I got the opportunity to assist one
of the professor with my teammates for preparing and collecting materials for our test, which
taught me the importance of teamwork and make me more responsible. During my MA program,
I have passed several exams -UGC NET JRF, GATE. I have done two self-paced courses on
econometrics and game theory from Swayam. Currently doing a workshop on effective teaching
from Nptel+(Jan 2025) and have basic knowledge of programming skills namely R and Stata.
I have interest in doing research in microeconomics (optimization techniques, exception to law
of demand like Giffen paradox, Veblen good), Game theory(Nash equilibrium)(Inspired by the
work of John Nash), prisoner's dilemma, Bertrand paradox .In development economics (Validity
of Kuznets hypothesis in measuring relationship between Economic growth (EG) and income
inequality, impact of globalization in income inequality, what strategy should a country adopt
for EG - Balanced or Unbalanced). Also, the work of Amartya Sen on famine, Capability
approach inspires me. Application of econometrics tools for testing different economic
theories. But there are certain fields in economics that I have not explored yet e.g.- Labour
economics, Behavioral economics. If I get the opportunity to study these papers, I am eager to
go deeper. Due to covid during my undergraduate, I did not get the opportunity to do fieldwork
and my master’s program lacks in that.

I want to do PhD in IIMB because of its good academic standing (NIRF rank 2). The faculties of
the Economics department have expertise in theoretical, empirical and policy related work and
made national and international contributions. The department has BIG BAG TALKS and
international standards education. The institute has International Research Center and Journal
Articles, Books, Collaborations, Strong Publication record and labs like behavioral science,
consumer insights to support research activities. Which is difficult to find in one institute. I wish
with the guidance of faculties and using resources, I will be able to grow in academics, career,
work on weak points and conduct fruitful research.
