1.

Understand the Basics

 Complex Numbers: A complex number is expressed as a + bi, where:

o 'a' is the real part.

o 'b' is the imaginary part.

o 'i' is the imaginary unit, defined as the square root of -1 (i² = -1).

2. Key Operations

 Addition/Subtraction: Combine real parts with real parts, and imaginary parts with imaginary
parts.

o (a + bi) + (c + di) = (a + c) + (b + d)i

o (a + bi) - (c + di) = (a - c) + (b - d)i

 Multiplication: Use the distributive property (FOIL method). Remember that i² = -1.

o (a + bi)(c + di) = ac + adi + bci + bdi² = (ac - bd) + (ad + bc)i

 Division: Multiply both the numerator and denominator by the complex conjugate of the
denominator.

o The complex conjugate of a + bi is1 a - bi.

o This eliminates the imaginary part in the denominator.

3. Practice and Examples

 Addition: (3 + 2i) + (1 - 4i) = (3 + 1) + (2i - 4i) = 4 - 2i

 Subtraction: (5 - i) - (2 + 3i) = (5 - 2) + (-i - 3i) = 3 - 4i

 Multiplication: (2 + i)(3 - 2i) = 6 - 4i + 3i - 2i² = 6 - i - 2(-1) = 8 - i

 Division: (1 + i) / (2 - i)

o Multiply numerator and denominator by (2 + i): [(1 + i)(2 + i)] / [(2 - i)(2 + i)] = (2 + i +
2i + i²) / (4 - i²) = (1 + 3i) / 5 = 1/5 + (3/5)i

4. Key Concepts

 Imaginary Unit (i): Understand the properties of 'i' (i² = -1, i³ = -i, i⁴ = 1, etc.)

 Complex Conjugate: The complex conjugate of a + bi is a - bi.

 Visual Representation: Complex numbers can be represented on the complex plane (Argand
diagram).

5. Tips

 Break Down Problems: Divide complex problems into smaller, more manageable steps.

 Practice Regularly: Consistent practice is key to mastering complex number operations.

 Use Online Resources: Utilize online calculators and tutorials to check your work and explore
interactive visualizations.
 Consult with a Teacher or Tutor: If you're struggling, don't hesitate to seek help from a
qualified instructor.

By following these steps and practicing regularly, you can effectively solve complex number
problems.
