Class Response #8
Class Response #8
This form is designed to encourage the student to articulate highlights, concerns, or questions regarding
this week’s lecture and reading material.
1. What ideas or concepts were new to you in the lectures or reading material this week?
i. The connection of the word eucharista and Thanksgiving in relation to the
“Service of the Table” was new concept for me. I did not realize the connection
before. The elaboration of the “Eucharist” in terms of remembrance and
anticipation of the Christ’s return, intercession and Kiss of peace reflected the
Eucharist of the first century. I noticed the terms and class discussion was to go
back to first century for closer look and better understanding was undeniably
important. It was important because only Eucharist and Baptism are the two
sacrament that Protestant believe that our Lord Jesus Christ commanded us to
follow.
ii. First & Second Century worship- I studied these historical details while
completing the Church history in Bachelor of Theology and Master of Divinity.
The difference between those classes and this class are different in its composure,
methodology, resources in terms of worship and practical application.
Undoubtedly, the theological message remains unchangeable reasonably but this
class has introduced the concrete style of worship based on the historical events. I
never imagined that I am gonna repeat the same historical details in the worship
classes. This gave me a serious theological insight that I must not undermine
what I already have studied and collected from the classes even though they are
from different course majors.
2. In what ways have the lectures and the reading material from this week shaped your
understanding of both private and corporate worship?
a. The connection of the worship with the Church sacrament- As a church music student, we
are prone to focus on developing the musical skills and other things for granted such as
Lord’s Supper in church every month (assumably). In this class, the way we focused on
the sacrament and minimized the content of music helped to realize the core value of the
worship. The amazing content of worship is hidden within the right approaches of the
sacrament. This insight compelled me to gaze more on the importance of the Lord’s
Supper. I started to look at every Lord’s Supper I took part in wasn’t part of greater
worship where I didn’t earn the place and by his grace alone.
b. The connection of the worship with Christian ethics- Without ethical life how can I serve
and worship him? This fundamental reality was never far from me. But in the class, the
reminder sparked me think again about the worship and ministry. For God’s worship
minister, this is something that lies within our daily attempt to construct and rebuild again
and again for betterment of the personal growth in Christ and testimony. I am reminded to
live holy life everyday.
c. The connection of the worship with Masses and its formation- I realized many of us
didn’t memorize the content of the masses. It is quite surprising that the historical and
foundational application of the church was based on Ordinary and Masses. We still
follow the old ways fundamentally. The outer picture of the worship style may look
different, but I want to repeat the fact that the core structure of our present worship still
follows the same pattern of Masses such as sacramental focus, liturgical structure,
participation and inclusivity, and expression of the core values. I hope to not forget this
greater reality.
3. Were there aspects of the information presented that caused questions or concerns? Or, were there
any areas with which you disagreed or would like further clarification?
a. No, none of the aspects of the information presented that caused question or concerns.
4. In what ways might you consider applying the learnings from this week to your own ministry area
or personal devotional life?
a. I am gonna memorize all the terminology and meanings related to the Ordinary and Mass.
It would take some time but I hope to continue to learn those terms and try to apply its
fundamental message and core values in connection with the synthesis of chapel.
b. I am not gonna undermined the values we inherited from the history and especially from
the first and second century Christian mission.
