27. Read the excerpt given below and answer the questions –
Sri Lanka became an independent nation in 1948. The leaders of the Singhalese
community wanted to dominate the government on the basis of their majority.
Because of this, the democratically elected government took steps under
majoritarianism to establish the supremacy of the Sinhalese community. In 1956,
a law was made, under which Sinhala language was declared the sole official
language, bypassing Tamil language. The policy of giving priority to Sinhalese in
universities and government jobs also continued. A provision was also made in
the new constitution that the government will also protect and promote
Buddhism. These government decisions, which came one after another, increased
the resentment and unfamiliarity with the governance among Sri Lankan Tamils.
They felt that all political parties led by Buddhist Sinhalese were insensitive
towards their language and culture. The Constitution and government policies
are depriving them of equal political rights. The result was that relations
between the Tamil and Sinhalese communities deteriorated.
(a) When did Sri Lanka become an independent nation?
(b) Explain the meaning of majoritarianism.
(c) When was Sinhalese declared the only official language in Sri Lanka?
(d) Which is the majoritarian community in Sri Lanka?

28. Read the excerpt given below and answer the questions –
Shyamal says that he needs to borrow money in every season to plough his 1.5
acres of land. Till a few years ago, he used to take loan from the village
moneylender on which he had to pay 5% monthly interest (60% annual). For the
last few years, Shyamal has been taking a loan from an agricultural businessman
of village at the rate of 3% monthly interest. At the beginning of the ploughing
season, the businessman provides agricultural needs on loan which has to be
returned when the crop is ready. Apart from interest on the loan, the
businessman also takes a promise from the farmers that he will sell his crop also
to him. With this the businessman is assured that his loan will be repaid on time.
Crop prices are fixed at the time of harvesting; hence he earns huge profits by
buying the crop from farmers at a low price and then selling it when the price
increases. The businessman gets profit by purchasing the crop at that time. He
buys the crop cheaply and sells it later when the price increases.
(a) In the above paragraph, from which source does Shyamal get the loan?
(b) Which negative side of informal source of credit has been shown?
(c) Give a suggestion to help the farmers like Shyamal.
(d) What are included in the formal sources of loan?
