Presentation

This presentation evaluates the effectiveness of herbicide-based weed management strategies in aromatic rice varieties in Bangladesh. The study finds that pre and post-emergence herbicide applications significantly reduce weed density and biomass, leading to higher grain and straw yields, particularly in the BRRI dhan38 variety. Recommendations include conducting multi-location trials, cautious herbicide use, and farmer education on application techniques.

This presentation covers the study on the effectiveness of different weed management strategies in aromatic
rice varieties.
Introduction

• Aromatic rice is an important crop in

Bangladesh, valued for its fragrance and
high market demand.

• Challenges: Weeds cause significant

yield loss, requiring efficient
management methods.

• Objective: Evaluating herbicide-based

weed management practices to support
better yield outcomes in aromatic rice.
Background on Weed Control in Rice

• Impact of Weeds: Weeds are a major

threat, reducing global rice yields by
up to 34%.

• Current Practices: Farmers rely

heavily on manual and mechanical
weeding, which is labor-intensive and
costly.

• Shift to Herbicides: Labor shortages

push a shift towards herbicidal
solutions for timely, effective control.
Objective of the Study

• Goal: To identify the most effective

herbicide-based weed management strategy
in aromatic rice.
• Focus Varieties: Five aromatic rice types
including Kalijira, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37,
BRRI dhan38, and Binadhan-13.
• Approach: Comparison of multiple weed
control methods to understand impact on
weed reduction and crop yield.
Experimental Design

• Design: Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD)

with three replications.
• Treatments: Six weed management treatments
including no weeding, weed-free, manual/mechanical
weeding, and combinations with herbicides.
• Herbicide Application Timing: Pre-emergence and
post-emergence applications to target early and late
weed growth stages.
Herbicide Details

• Types of Herbicides:
- Pre-emergence: Bensulfuran methyl
+ Acetachlor, applied at 5 days after
transplanting (DAT).
- Post-emergence: Pyrazosulfuron
ethyl, applied at 30 DAT.
• Mode of Action: Selective for grassy and
sedge weeds in rice fields, protecting the
crop while reducing weed load.
• Environmental Considerations: Ensuring
correct dosage to minimize resistance and
environmental impact.
Weed Composition in the Field

• Field Weeds: Eleven weed species identified,

spanning grass, broadleaf, and sedge families.
• Dominant Species: Grass weed Echinochloa
crusgalli and broadleaf Monochoria vaginalis.
• Weed Analysis: Summed Dominance Ratio
(SDR) method used to measure prevalence and
impact of each species.
Results - Weed Density and Biomass Reduction

• Weed Density Reduction: Pre + post-emergence

herbicides showed highest weed density reduction at all
sampling dates.

• Biomass Reduction: Weed-free and pre + post-

emergence herbicide treatments had the lowest weed
biomass, reducing competition.

• Efficiency: Pre + post-emergence treatment found

nearly as effective as complete weed-free plots,
indicating strong control potential.
Yield Contributing Characters

• Effective Tillers: Highest tiller numbers observed in

BRRI dhan38 and Binadhan-13.

• Grains per Panicle: Increased grains per panicle seen

in weed-free and herbicide treatments.

• Panicle Length: Longer panicles contribute to yield;

highest length in BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan38.
Grain and Straw Yield

• Grain Yield: Highest in BRRI dhan38 with weed-free and pre +

post-emergence herbicides.

• Straw Yield: Maximum straw yield seen in weed-free plots; a

secondary product adding value.

• Overall: Both grain and straw yield benefitted significantly

from herbicidal weed management compared to no weeding.
Harvest Index

• Definition: Harvest Index (HI) is the ratio of grain yield to

total biomass yield.

• Results: BRRI dhan38 and Binadhan-13 achieved highest

HI with pre + post-emergence herbicide treatment.

• Implication: Higher HI indicates more efficient conversion

of biomass to grain yield, enhancing crop profitability.
Conclusion

• Key Findings: Pre + post-emergence herbicide applications effectively

controlled weeds, increasing yield.

• Practicality: Sequential herbicide use is recommended as an alternative to

labor-intensive weeding.

• Varietal Performance: BRRI dhan38 stands out for yield, showing

adaptability to herbicidal weed control.
Future Recommendations

• Multi-location Trials: Conduct trials across regions and years to ensure

consistent effectiveness.

• Environmental Caution: Use herbicides judiciously to prevent resistance and

ecological harm.

• Farmer Education: Training on proper herbicide application to maximize

efficacy and sustainability.
