Types of Sentences

There are three types of sentence structures: simple, complex, and


compound. A simple sentence has only one independent clause. Complex
ones have one independent clause and one dependent clause. The
compound type has two or more independent clauses. These dependent
and independent clauses are separated by a conjunction. There are two
types of conjunctions;
 Co-ordinating (FANBOYS=for,and,nor,but,or,yet,so)
 Sub-ordinating.

A sentence which contains coordinating conjunctions is considered as


Compound sentence, a sentence which contains subordinating conjunction is
considered as a complex sentence.
State whether the following sentences are Simple, Compound or Complex.
1. We have to go to bed when the clock chimes ten o’clock.
2. Jennifer liked William’s friend, and she also liked his cousin.
3. The big brown dog ran after the blue and red ball.
4. James and Eve rode their bicycles after they ate lunch.
5. The teacher and the principal met in the hall near the library.
6. Many brave soldiers fought in the war, and they received medals.
7. The drummers played a long time, but the piano players stopped early.
8. Before the queen rode in the parade, she gave a speech.
9. After midnight the ghosts will come out of the haunted attic.
10. She dropped the pan and the plate, but she held on to the spoon.
11. Kerry called the fi re department, and they arrived very quickly.
12. After he got home, my father read us a story.
13. We couldn’t go to the beach because the car broke down.
14. The magician pulled a rabbit from his hat, but the audience did not
applaud.
15. The baby elephant followed its mother because the lion was very close.
16. The forest was dark and gloomy, yet the children ran into it fearlessly.
17. The campers stayed in the tent while the cold rain fell.
18. Jane and Louise bought popcorn before the movie started
19. Peter worked hard on his homework, yet he didn’t fi nish it.
20. The baseball player ran to second base when the pitcher dropped the
ball.
